[Article] Look at the stars, they are Coldplay

Featured Replies

Coldplay front man Chris Martin once famously said: "There would be no Coldplay music without Jonny Buckland."

The 28-year-old guitarist — real name Jonathan Mark Buckland — may not have his mug plastered all over the tabloids like Martin, 29, for supporting political causes or marrying a high-profile actress (Gwyneth Paltrow in Martin's case). But he has been consistently ranked as Coldplay's most valuable member.

For one thing, Buckland is the man with the plan as far as the rest of the London-based quartet is concerned. The band also comprises drummer Will Champion, 27, and bassist Guy Berryman, 28.

"I'm the one who kind of gets excited about all the ideas and the music, but not the media," Buckland told Today, hours before their sold-out performance at the Singapore Indoor Stadium yesterday evening.

The megastars rolled into town quietly from Australia on Saturday night. The lack of fanfare was deliberate.

In fact, the location of the interview — one of the hotels at Sentosa — was a closely-guarded secret and was not even given to this reporter until a couple of hours prior to the meeting.

Buckland was a picture of serenity when this reporter was introduced to him. Having the chance to rest for a full day obviously did wonders for the band.

"Oh, we did nothing but relax at the beach ... it's a nice change from being in airports all the time," the affable musician said with a laugh.

Coldplay last visited Singapore in 2001, co-headlining a concert with Scottish rockers Travis at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Back then, the quartet were the new kids on the block and best known for their hit single Yellow, from their 2000 debut album Parachutes.

Today, Travis seems to have disappeared from the musical map while Coldplay has ascended to the position of rock royalty.

Indeed, by the time their third album X&Y was released last year, Coldplay were in the big leagues with multi-million selling albums and a reputation as one of a few acts that can burn the stage when performing live.

X&Y also had the honour of being the fastest selling album in British history and has since sold over 8.4 million albums worldwide, putting the band in the same league as big earners Mariah Carey and 50 Cent.

With such success, press intrusion was inevitable.

Lesser acts would have buckled under the pressure, but it didn't bother Coldplay one bit.

"We can cope with the media attention — we just ignore it," Buckland added with a grin.

"The media attention on Coldplay may be at full speed now, but after the tour, we'll just go away, lock ourselves in the studio and it'll just be the four of us again. So no one's got too big for his boots in that sense.

"We're still great friends and when we're recording, we are going to be cut off from all the press and all that nonsense. Besides, we've stopped reading what goes on in the papers anyway."
