Zidane given ban and fine by FIFA

Featured Replies

I am glad that both players have been grounded. After all, Ziz was not the only one to blame.

I happened to note this detail on the link you showed:

"Fifa added: "Zinedine Zidane has agreed to do community service work with children and youngsters. "

-Well, I hope he doesn't encourage the kids to headbutt like he did...!!!!!!!!!

This punishment is utterly pointless.

a) Banning Zidane for 3 games, when he won't ever play again anyway?

b) And fining them pocket change?

They were better off not doing anything. The whole thing is just a huge joke.

Read the whole article. True he's not playing anymore games, but he will be doing 'community service' for FIFA.

What more could they do, bar a bigger fine?

I read the article. Thanks for the smart-alec comment by the way...

I hardly think doing community service is punishment enough, considering the severity of the act. Besides, a man of his stature should be helping the community anyway. He shouldn't have to be forced to do it.

And the fine should have been way more significant. Any old Joe Schmo could have paid that fine off. The act was witnessed by billions, literally, and so I feel the fines should have been in 6-figures. That way it'll remind others to not do something as harsh an act as headbutting.

I think that's half the reason he did what he did in the final. If I were him I knew I would get away with it while getting his opponent in trouble as well. He was very clever in doing what he did.

^ Oh come on, in the second he was headbutting him, he certainly didn't think "Hmm when I'm doing that now, it doesn't matter anyway, French fans will keep on loving me, who cares about such a scandalous ending, videos of me will be all over the web, I won't get a very hard punishment - oooh and that stupid Italian will be punished, too, woohooo, let's headbut him now!" .. That's ridiculous!

He was certainly not "clever" when he did that.. I can't even describe how much I disagree!

I think it's good that Materazzi's punishment is almost as much as Zidane's, being banned for two games and a fine, too.

I think the decision is perfect.

if every player who had insulted someone during a match would have been banned for 2 plays there would not be a soccer match anymore ;)

The cleverest thing is to win the Cup! That's waaaaay better than headbutting! Headbutting is rather a stupid thing!Dont tell me he thinks he's better off ending his career with that kinda foolishness!

Materazzi will probably not be enrolled in Donadoni's national team. So those two games actually make little sense.

Couldn't agree more.

"...they want to justify the gesture of a great champion, who made a mistake." - Paolo Maldini on Materazzi's fine/ban.
