Concept Album by Coldplay ???

Featured Replies

What would you think if Coldplay's next Album was a concept Album ????

By this i mean an Album like The Who's Tommy, Lifehouse & Quadrophenia

or Pink Floyds The Wall ????

A Rock Opera ....

Thumbs Up.... or Thumbs Down ...

I remember Chris saying that the next album would be really electronic sounding and electronically done. I would be up for a concept album though. They've made three different albums all of which are well done. I think a concept album would be worth their time and ours. Then the next one after that could be a good old fashioned parachutes/AROBTTH album.

I HAVE to weigh in on this!!! It may be the wrong section, but what a great topic!!! hey, Nitehawk, do you know Genesis' 'Selling England By The Pound' or 'The Lamb Lies down On Broadway'?? Imagine Coldplay using that knd of lyrical imagery!! As a musician, I'm trying to imagine how it would sound. I wouldn't hold my breath for it...but WOW!!! Thanks for giving some of us something to dream about...lol!!

mmm....yeh, that would be cool! - and different, which ads to the coolness...

But, I hope it isn't too electronically done/sounded, cos it takes away something from it...

You want a picture of how an electronic type album goes bad look at The Future Embrace by Billy Corgan.

It is not terrible, but by no means is it something great or even really good. I think it is just fair IMO.

Hopefully CP doesn't end up like that. ;)

to have aconcept album really isn't theire style.

Not really their style. But as musicians get older they look for new challenges and think about things like that...Billy Corgan and Radiohead for example. I tried my hand at a concept album once...IT SUCKED!!! Lol. But Chris wants to study Classical music when he's older, so, y'never know...

LOL! I'd love to hear him play some Mozart piano sonotas though! *Heart skips a beat*

I' d kida like to lough of what classical chiris knows, but I thing the fans wont appreciate that.

Well, alot of new fans might not, but as the band grows, the fans grow too. And if you really care about the bands you love, I think it's easier to get used to new things from them. In the end, a musician has to please themself first, otherwise they're not being honest with themselves or their fans.

I think the new coldplay fans won't appreciate the nappies and the jonny buckland documentary. because they think coldplay was hardcore in the past.

Sad but true. My best friend has been a fan since paraschutes and she thinks Ode To Deodorant is pointless...and that's one of their earliest songs...lol! Some ppl want Coldplay to be 'serious and emotional' all the time. But I love it when they're just having fun too.

they really always do... epecially chris....

i can see them doing a concept album rock opera type deal way down the road, like in 3 or 4 albums time (i pray they get there!). IMO a 4th album is just to early to spring something like that, when some fans (not US, of course :wink2:) might get turned off by something like that etc. i think once they have 3 or 4 brilliant, innovative, and critically acclaimed albums, then theyd try it, knowing them. chris may be thinking about it now, but knowing him, he wont even try to release something like that for years. i dont even think theyll end up releasing some huge electronic thing next as chris says. i think it may be different, but just not that far out.

just my thoughts on it...

i dont know why but i feel they'll do a type of rubber soul and revolver album they seem to really want to be like the beatles

^that would be cool

but rubber soul and revolver, while they have their differences, are very similar to each other. george harrison called them "volume I" and "volume II" of the same album. personally, i think id prefer if they didnt do something like this because X&Y was not my favorite album of theirs and id like something really different. however, ill be grateful for ANY new material!

i think that's a good idea :)

But ofcourse it's not IF they do it that matters, it's HOW they do it.

And about the whole electronic sound, I don't think they mean techno or anything, I mean, when they talked about X&Y they talked about "re-inventing the wheel" so I everything they say shouldn't been taked 100% seriously, I think.

I think that a concept album by coldplay would be brilliant. X&Y was a so-so half concept album, with all the math playing into most of the album, but I'm thinking something drastic and futuristic like 'Spiritual Machines' by Our Lady Peace. Coldplay has established itself as a major band in musical history, so I think that they have enough fame to make a concept album work. Something playing off of consciousness or the fate of the universe would be intelligent and would sell a lot because of the established fan base.

If you haven't already heard Spiritual Machines by Our Lady Peace, do so. If Coldplay can pull that off, I will be very happy. Incidentally, Spiritual Machines was OLP's 4th album as well!

actually The Bends is Radiohead's only "concept album" (all the songs use human illness/"brokenness" as a metaphor). OK Computer might be semi-concept with the technology thing but the songs are still about a broad range of things to do with modern life. You can tie their other albums together very nicely in different ways but they are intentionally vague so they don't have a single concept, just an emotional and musical unity (which is also true of most albums anyone puts out, including Coldplay's).

Brian Eno worked on Lamb Lies DOwn on Broadway.. so... maybe you guys are right after all!

but would you consider Talking Heads' Remain in Light a concept album? See, the words "concept album" don't really mean anything. Any good album should have a concept behind it, and most of the good ones, the concept is in the background.. if the concept is the main thing you notice, enough to want to call it a "concept album", then the music and lyrics probably suck.
