patoronto
U2 is Terrible I saw U2 in Toronto the same year as Coldplay. U2 was simply terrible, not only did they NOT play some of their best songs (Still Haven't Found...) but Bono refused to shut the hell up. Kept talking about poverty meanwhile hes charging 100 bucks for the worst seats in the house. Granted, he has done a lot of humanitarian work, but i went to the concert to hear him sing and the guy wouldnt stop talking, Ridiculous. Coldplay were filiming a DVD when i saw them in TO and they barely spoke, for Coldplay it's always been about the music and thats what I love. I HATE when people compare Coldplay to U2 because they are totally different and apart from Square One, there is no U2 similarities in any other song and thats why Coldplay is awesome. The biggest difference is that after the U2 concert I became totally uninterested in the band and have been since, after Coldplay I became an even bigger fan because Coldplay is a band, and band's play music at concerts. Talk on your own time Bono, not when i pay 100 bucks to sit and be bored with you and your hypocratic self-righteouss ramblings. Flying Sparks
I like U2 so I'm not able to agree with you, especially because I'd LOVE to see U2 live one day which I haven't had the chance to yet! But I'm sorry you had this experience and feel this way - and though you obviously lost U2 as one of your favourite bands, you at least won the love for another great band: Coldplay :D I'm sorry that you feel this way about U2, I was really disappointed by a Franz Ferdinand concert last year and promised myself never to listen to their songs again, but you'll get over it, believe me, because no matter how bad that FF concert sucked, I started listening to their music again and it's awesome indeed! And there must be a reason why you used to love U2 - so try to get over that concert and appreciate their music again :)

brazzo
Ya... I am a U2 fan, too. U2 leaded me to start loving Rock'n'roll. And Bono is also a great singer. Even though Bono care about politic but I don't mind.
Silverspira
i think U2 is a great band, but they are over-rated. They are not good enough to be seen as one of the biggest bands in the world. Coldplay is so much better then U2, oh I'm sorry, I don't compare them cause they don't sound the same. Just my thoughts ;)
ApproximatelyInfinite
to each their own, but im a huge U2 fan, and was before i got into coldplay. personally, i like that bono talks to the audience, but i mostly like the jokes and random stuff that he doesnt pull every night. the political rant can get a bit tedious, but personally, i think its worth it. he has such a platform there for his causes, how can he help not but to support what matters to him? chris does it with MTF. and if you dont agree, you can tune it out and wait for the music to come back. i saw u2 last december and absolutely loved it, right between my two coldplay concerts. youre right, theyre very different live. u2 is more about the whole experience, and i loved it for that. my friend actually cried, and totally flipped out when we saw bono outside afterwards, and i still make fun of him for it! coldplays concerts are more about the music, with less of a huge spectacle tacked on, and in my opinion, both are great to experience. i actually wish coldplay did a bit more unscripted talking to the audience, because i like stuff like that. of course, your own opinion is the one that matters, though :)
Lifelike
Chris did plenty of talking to us. I attended the Seattle concert in January and the whole time he was teasing us about the Seahawks going to the Superbowl and all that jazz. It hyped the crowd up, oh yes. I'm not a U2 fan (though you'd expect me to be!), and I don't think Coldplay sounds anything like U2 at all, but I guess it's all a matter of what you think sounds more U2 than Coldplay. There are songs that have similarities (Square One for sure, we all know) but nothing too concrete. Hopefully Coldplay's sound will develop and ultimately change how people view them, possibly by making a newer, unique sound?
ApproximatelyInfinite
^hmm...i dont see the connection between U2 and "square one" like everyone keeps saying. i actually never thought about that before, and i can't say i agree. can anyone tell me where they see the similarity? id like to know which part to look out for it in. i think the guitar work in the background of "warning sign" is very U2-ish. i knew it was my favorite song for a reason... he talked a bit to my 2nd concert...he even brought a girl up on stage, but compared to other concerts ive been to, those guys are pretty silent. i think with a few more albums (probably the next one), theyll become more confident onstage and open up a bit more. yellow_fever
Uh well, I think it may be that Sqaure One and Even Better Than The Real Thing were mashed together and it shows the likeness of each other. I find that they are similar, but by far, I prefer Sq1 :D (Even though I find U2 is pretty good !)
fudge
there's a fine line between highlighting your cause and ramming it down people's throats. having seen Richard Ashcroft at IOW, I understand this fully! lol I like U2. Never seen them tho. I'd be more concerned about the music tho I think. I'd be gutted if they didn't play the big hits. Having paid all that money I'd expect to. If I wanted to hear Bono go off on one I could just watch that on TV. Having said that, it is nice to hear a bit of chat. The jokes and interaction with the audience is REALLY important too. busybeeburns
I've hardly ever listened to U2 and I certainly haven't seen them live so I can't really comment on this thread.
musicman1990
wow...that's kinda harsh. Sorry you had a bad U2 experience! I actually think Coldplay don't talk enough. When Chris gets going it's HYSTERICAL. Some of the things he says just leave an audience cracking up. Espcially his talks he does before the acoustic set ab Johnny Cash and stuff. It's great. But that's just my opinion, anyway. I've never been a HUGE U2, fan, but I've always liked them alot. And, honestly...the statement should be the other way around. Coldplay are not like U2. Seeing as U2 came first and are legends. Coldplay will be one day, but not now. They only have 3 albums. That's just me. I do like Coldplay better, though. Denise
It's funny how the same things can be seen from different points of view :) Last year I've been to two Coldplay and two U2 concerts...but hell, no Coldplay gig by now could beat U2's...they're totally different (also because U2 played in a stadium and recorded the DVD at my two shows, while Coldplay played in smaller venues). Anyway coming to on of your points...it seems you don't like when the singers talk too much during a show...all I can say, especially when speaking about U2, is that all Bono's talking is a part of the band expression too, he's not talking about something which doesn't deal with the show, it's a part of it, because many of their songs are about the same things too: poverty, love, belief. I love when Bono talks, first cause I can see how much I can understand of what he says, and second because I think that most of the audience share his same thoughts. About the fact that they didn't play some of their most important songs...well it's rather obvious they can't play all their songs, it was the Vertigo tour, so most were coming from HTDAAB, otherwise they should have done a 10-hours long concert. They played "I still haven't found" at the shows I've been to, but they didn't play other songs (like "The unforgettable fire", and we wanted "An cat dubh/Into the heart" and "40", but they only played them while touring in America). Coldplay do the same: this year, for example, they played Shiver (which is one of their most important songs) only twice, and considering their shows don't even last too much, they could play all their hits if they want to. And well Chris did talk a bit during the concerts, and he shows the MTF mark on his hand and piano, but everything is kinda "invisible", while the "COEXIST" thing for U2 is far more embodied in all of their music. They're completely different from this point of view God I just can't understand why you're thinking this way  I went completely nuts at those shows, two of the best days of my life (plus other 2 for Coldplay) IMO bad for you, I can't wait to see DVD from my U2 concerts :nice: and see both bands live again without comparing their performances but just enjoying the show P.S. Johnny's guitar riff in Fix You is Edge-sound 100% :)
Ondes Martenot
P.S. Johnny's guitar riff in Fix You is Edge-sound 100% :) ...and Everything's Not Lost has a similar riff as Fix You people who compare Coldplay to U2 and name them as the "next U2" might be right. though hopefully not
