I think you should use greyish, dark but not deep colours.

A graveyard, maybe some tombstones and whatnot, ghosts (you could make those really abstract and maybe red or some wacky color because that seems Mew-ish), fog, a dark deserted street, a child committing suicide (although that would be stealing a bit), a dreary window overlooking a choppy sea, a dying fire, etc. :awesome:
