British people are the worst energy wasters in Europe, while Germans are the most efficient according to a survey of 5,000 people across the continent.

The research, compiled by the Energy Saving Trust, found that UK citizens admitting to 32 energy wasting actions a a week on average, more than twice as many as the efficient Germans.

"The UK is at the bottom of the energy efficiency league compared to (the) other European countries," said Philip Sellwood, chief executive of the Energy Saving Trust.

The wasteful habit the British found it hardest to kick was leaving appliances on standby - which applied to 71 per cent of respondents.

Other guilty secrets included boiling more water than needed, leaving electrical chargers plugged in, forgetting to turn lights off and using the car for short journeys.

Of the five countries surveyed, Britain was worst with an average 32 energy wasting actions per week, more than double the Germans 14. After Germany, came Spain, France, Italy and then the UK.

The study also found that within the UK, east Midlanders are the worst energy squanders and people from the South-west are the most energy efficient.

Not really a surprise for me. After the €uro had replaced our lovely DM nearly everything conspicuously became so expensive here, especially electricity and gas, so you only have one possibility... saving energy! I guess that's the main reason.

But your still born in the UK so that includes you..:P:P

I do my bit to save energy, I recycle a hell of alot as well.

You tell these businesses to switch the lights off after they finish work in the evenings, the number of towns and cities I've been through after working hours have finished and the lights are all on and lights outside buildings to light them up. Why?

The truth is that for every person like me who does more than their fair share, there are hundreds of people who couldn't give a fig.

It's so that drunken prats don't walk into the building and say they didn't see it. Also it has something to do with security.

I try to turn everything off, but sometimes you got to leave on standby otherwise the settings go.
