The 'First' Husbands Club

In the fickle world of Hollywood matrimony, these guys didn't have a chance

December 10, 2006

BY PAIGE WISER <mailto:[email protected]>

They said it wouldn't last. It didn't. Britney Spears wised up to the drawbacks of her droopy-drawered husband about two years after the rest of America did, and filed for divorce, just in time for the holidays.

It's a heart-warming story, and Fluff is happy for her. Brit has clearly moved on.

If only we could, too.

Again and again, our favorite female stars fall in love with men who aren't quite up to celebrity snuff. They marry them, foist them on their loyal public and then ... just as we start to accept, say, Cris Judd into our hearts ... boom! Their women grow bored with them, and they're kicked out of the mansion.

They've joined the First Husbands Club.

Their ex-wives may have already forgotten all about them, but we can't. Their names are burned into our brains.

Oh, don't get all technical on us. We know these gentlemen aren't all first husbands. Jason Alexander beat K-Fed to the punch, and Larry Fortensky wishes he were the first.

But they are first husbands in spirit. (And because it suits our editorial purposes.)

In this issue, we pay tribute to them.

And we pray for some closure.

TOM ARNOLD

He was a writer for her sitcom when star Roseanne Barr made him her second husband. "We're America's worst nightmare," Arnold gloated in 1990. "White trash with money!" It was a dark time. She changed her last name to his; he converted to Judaism. Four years later, they divorced, but Arnold did not go gently into that good night. With some impressive comedic turns in movies such as "True Lies" and his franchise "The Best Damn Sports Show Period," we have to admit that, in the end, we chose Team Tom.

PHIL BRONSTEIN

We're not saying Bronstein is a goof of the same magnitude as Kevin Federline. But when we're picking out a third husband for the Lust Icon of the '90s, we don't immediately think "goateed San Francisco newspaperman." Sharon Stone and Bronstein were married on St. Valentine's Day 1998, but we had a feeling things might go south after Stone gifted Bronstein with a trip to the zoo for Father's Day. Surprise! He was bitten by a Komodo dragon. They were divorced in 2004.

DAVID GUEST

Remember Liza Minnelli's 2002 marriage to this winner? Elizabeth Taylor was a maid of honor, while Michael -- and Tito! -- Jackson were best men. Who could foresee that her fourth marriage would fall apart? Ah, but it did, and the divorce proceedings got ugly, with Gest accusing Minnelli of (gulp) violence. Thankfully, he's giving the states a break while he becomes a reality TV star in Australia. He's starring in "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!"

CHRIS ROBINSON

Kate Hudson was just 21 when she married the 12-years-older singer for the Black Crowes. Her fans didn't understand the attraction. "There was instant chemistry," she has said. "It's a great, committed relationship. I want to spend the rest of my life with him." Or, as it turns out, Owen Wilson. Hudson announced her separation from Robinson after promoting her movie "You, Me and Dupree."

CRIS JUDD

Keeping up with Jennifer Lopez's love interests is a full-time job. Her first husband, former waiter Ojani Noa, threatened to tell all in a book. There was the shooting with P. Diddy, the pink diamond with Ben Affleck. But our favorite Mr. Lopez is Cris Judd, the backup dancer she wed for nine months in 2001. He simply refuses to go away. He's appeared on "Eve" and "Everybody Loves Raymond" and made a cameo in the movie "Bringing Down the House." Now he seems intent on taking Paula Abdul's place as Hollywood's go-to choreographer.

Future First-Husbands

JORDAN BRATMANChristina Aguilera is singing "Ain't No Other Man" about him now, but she's got her new music-exec hubby up pretty high on that pedestal. We're bracing for a tumble.

CHRIS MARTINHe's an influential and talented musician, performing with his successful band, Coldplay. We know. But you can only write a song for a woman so many times before it gets old, especially if she's Gywneth Paltrow. DANNY MODERSure, he's got a certain laid-back charm. But wife Julia Roberts is a world-class power player, and she's going to get hungry for a challenge. Soon.

frankly, i wouldnt be surprised if they broke up in the not-too-distant future.

im not rooting for them to fail AT ALL, and i cant honestly say because i dont know either of them, but i just...wouldnt be all that shocked. gwyneth has always seemed very...independent.

i really hope they dont break up, for their sake, for apple and moses's sakes, and for chris's sake. if they got divorced, think about what the next coldplay album would be like? i think it would ruin chris.

just my opinion.

Chris seems to be just as independent as Gwyn, but just because a woman is independent (Like myslef) doesn't mean she doesn't want to find someone to spend the rest of her life with.

I think they're a very strong couple and keep their romance (And themselves) under wraps, which makes for a more private relationship. I think it's healthy and I beleive (And hope) they'll be together for a long time. :)

Awhisper21: I think it would ruin Chris too. Every time Chris talks about his wife or kids in interviews his eyes light up. But I think they'll make it to the end (of their lives...)

I hope they stay together. I think that Chris is good enough for Gwyneth... even though he has hinted at it being otherwise a couple of times.

They'll stay together for a long time and I doubt that they will break up. (Gise, if you are reading this PLEASE do not shoot me.)

I hope they don't, the album after that would be pretty depressing...

I don't think they will though, two kids and they're still able to carry on w/ their careers...

GO CHRIS AND GWEN!!!

^ Someone once said that he wished Chris and Gwyn would break up because then Chris would write the best album ever.

I thought that was one of the most horrible things I'd ever heard.

That's a pretty stupid thing to say.

That's terrible. ^

Even if they did break up, I don't think Chris would let it affect Coldplay.

But again they seem like a very stable couple, if they were to break up, it would have been earlier in their relationship when they were getting A LOT of media attention (they still do, but not as bad as a couple of years ago.)

Personally, I think I write great songs when I'm miserable, but I wouldn't wish sadness on Chris for the sake of a good song...that's just cruel.

They did split up for a short time about 3 years ago, but obviously they worked it out, so hopefully they're gonna make it!:D
