What makes a good song??

Featured Replies

Dont know if this question has been posted anywhere. But i was wondering for all of you guys. What makes a good song in your opinion. What gets you hooked on a song. What makes you like it??There could be many reasons. But i was wondering what you guys thought.

I think lyrics are a given for everyone.A song with good lyrics. You cant go wrong. But i guess for me its a combontion.Lyrics and the flow of the song.Doesnt really matter what intruments are being played. But if the song just flows like everything just fits ya know.Dont know if im explaining it right haha. But yea. Also a catchy riff will get me hooked like that!!

well for me if a song contained any of these then i most likely would love it :D

- good lyrics (like many of coldplay's songs), not about going down the street and being shot or anything like that haha.

- piano of some sort (don't know what it is but it just gets me)

- falsetto (or a good range)

i'm easy, just as long as it ain't rap/gothic/full on metal crap i'm good :P

for me the best songs are the ones where you can hear a unique style = the band is experimental....

i must like the melody of the song and of course the lyrics. but there has to be something about it - i mean that it can be rock/pop/rap/whatever, i just need to feel something when I'm listening to it.

I totally agree. I think it isn't about the genre, it's about that something you can feel in good music.

At first listen, if the song doesn't have something that strikes me, say guitar, percussion, beat, melody, whatever, then I won't like it. It could be the best damn lyrics written but if the "music" isn't worthy, then I'll likely pass. Sufjan Stevens really is an amazing example of what every artist should have, BEAUTIFUL MUSIC and with more listens, even better lyrics.

Don't get me wrong, lyrics are important, but in my case, it is not the thing that attracts me initially to a song.

Now learning to love a song, that is another story. Take Bright Eyes for example. Many listens are required for me to absorb the greatness.

I prefer songs with piano, but it doesn't have to be there. I like big, ringing, layered guitars, like Oasis and Coldplay. I have to appreciate the lyrics on some level, but they don't have to be complex, though tht's what I prefer.

When a song gives you shivers it is a good song.
