Newbie's Got a Few Questions

Featured Replies

forgive me if this isn't thread-worthy, but as i'm new this site and have never before gotten a chance to discuss Coldplay with anyone (none of my friends or family listen to them), i have a few questions to ask of you, their dedicated and knowledgeable fanbase. I'll try to keep it short and to the point:

*Other than the three albums, which i love and have listened to many times, how much material is there out by the band in the way of unreleased songs?

*How might i get my hands (and ears) on these unreleased tracks, and are any of them worth listening to (ie. are they of similar musical quality to the stuff on the albums, or are they rough, unfinished and kind of meh)

*Having never listened to a Coldplay concert or live recording (other than a few scattered clips and their Austin City Limits appearance . .. which was stellar by the way), what should i listen to first? In other words, Is there a concert recording or video of one of their shows that is sort of agreed upon as being Coldplay at their absolute best/ a must have for fans of the band? Would Live 2003 fit this description?

*I saw this on wikipedia: "There are four known new songs: "Mining on the Moon", "The Butterfly", "The Fall of Man" and "Bucket for a Crown"" . . are any of these available?

*also on wikipedia: "musician and producer Brian Eno revealed that he would be the producer for Coldplay's fourth album" . . how rediculously cool is THAT! brain eno!!! awesome [rhetorical question of course :laugh3: ]

*what's the news on the new album in terms of release date or interview clips from the band and whatnot . . any idea what it'll be like as compared to the other 3 albums?

*since i've never seen them live, i was wondering: when they play live do they extend or "jam out" their songs at all, or is it pretty much exactly what's on the record?

thanks for humouring me, and thanks in advance for your responses!

edit: and, as i just realized what day it is, is 420 an international holiday, or is it only celebrated here in the U.S.? i've always wondered that :D

-for the first two questions, check out the multimedia section...

-for number 3, yes live 2003 would fit it

-once again multimedia section

-yes , it is cool

-we do not no of the release date, expect late this year or early next year. and its supposed to be a different sound, darker, no piano

-for the most part on record, but sometimes not...

i don't no about the holiday outisde

welcome to colpdlaying

Coldplay have a number of exeptional b-sides icluding tracks such as I Ran Away, Crest of Waves, Help Is Round the Corner, One I Love, Things I Dont Understand and For You... all of which, in my opinion, stand shoulder to shoulder with the songs found on the albums and are a must hear for any major Coldplay fan. These songs can be found on import singles which can in turn be found on places like amazon or ebay. If you have a quality record store in your area you may also be able to pick up a few there. It's a fun, if not a little expensive, hobby trying to collect them all and the main page has an excellent discography that will help ypu get started. The Blue Room EP came out before Parachutes and is also a solid effort with songs like See You Soon, Such a Rush, and Bigger Stronger. This is somewhat rare and when found can be a little costly but if your building a complete collection it's well worth it. Live 2003 is also great and while I wouldnt say that they "jam out" they do bring a certain new life to the songs live that keeps them interesting and takes them to another level. In short... most of the non album tracks are fantastic, all are interesting, and I gurantee you will find a new favorite or two. Have fun discovering them.

Hi, and welcome.

Um, off the top of my head:

*Other than the three albums, which i love and have listened to many times, how much material is there out by the band in the way of unreleased songs?

If you count b-sides and EPs, quite a bit. If you want a list of pretty much everything, check this out: http://www.coldplaying.com/page.php?file=/html/tracksearch/index.htm

*How might i get my hands (and ears) on these unreleased tracks, and are any of them worth listening to (ie. are they of similar musical quality to the stuff on the albums, or are they rough, unfinished and kind of meh)

B-sides are studio quality, except for a few live tracks. Content-wise, I adore most of them. They are the songs Coldplay are a little more willing to play around with their style on. Some can be really fast and fun like "1.36". Others are very slow and quiet, but beautiful, like "For You". Quite a few arguably should have been on the album if only there was room, especially most everything recorded during the sessions for A Rush of Blood to the Head. There are also quite a few songs that were only ever played live. The audio quality on those varies, but many of the songs are worth a listen. For instance some people may dissagree with me, but I still think that "Sweet Marianne" has one of the best guitar riffs they have ever come up with, even if it only exists as an audience recording.

Some of the stuff you may come across on youtube if you look long enough. Otherwise check out the multimedia section here, and don't forget to use the search tool. http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=28

Live 2003 is probably the place to start. Besides that, I think their performance at the Glastonbury festival in 2002 is the best I have ever seen, and I know Coldplay used to talk about it in interviews as one of their favorites. All of their Glastonbury appearances are great, actually. There is also the tv special that was recorded in Toronto (supposedly for a non-existant dvd) recently.

I think "Bucket for a Crown" was something Chris threw together for an acoustic charity show last fall. There's a recording of it around somewhere.

I don't remember what the story is with the other ones. Maybe they were mentioned in an interview?

*what's the news on the new album in terms of release date or interview clips from the band and whatnot . . any idea what it'll be like as compared to the other 3 albums?

Big questions with no answers. I guess they like a couple of the songs they've written so far, but hadn't started properly recording them the last time they gave interviews, so between Brian Eno, Timbaland (yeah, he's working on it to. But it probably won't be hiphop-ish) and some bad reviews for X&Y that really bugged them, your guess is as good as anyone's.

*since i've never seen them live' date=' i was wondering: when they play live do they extend or "jam out" their songs at all, or is it pretty much exactly what's on the record?[/quote']

Things can change a bit from the albums sometimes, just through the process of being adapted for playing live, but they keep the show pretty tight and carefully planned out. No jamming. Although Chris likes to babble alot between songs.

Hope that helped. Alot of those were the same sort of questions I used to have when I started hanging around here. You'll find out alot as long as you're willing to explore. ;)

thank you for the thoughtful reply! I'll definitely check out those B-sides, and i think i'll sniff around for the Blue Room EP as well . . sounds interesting.

wow erin, thank you, sincerely, for the response. I can't say i'm too happy to find out that Timberland's on the album, but hopefully he'll only do one track or so, eh? Your info has helped me immensely. Again, thank you!

So, despite these wonderful answers from my fellow north americans, which have been quite helpful and informative, i feel I have to try once more to garner a response from the "old country". Hey! UK! Is there anybody out there?

A) What do you guys think about my querys? Is there a "must have" or essential show you could recommend other than Live 2003? - and -

B) is 4/20 celebrated in Europe? My curiosity is insatiable in this matter. I simply must know!:wink3:

definately try Toronto 2006 and Glastonbury 2005, both available around and about, both good quality performances.

Can't say i've ever heard of this 4/20 day. What's it all about?

4/20 is probably one of the greatest holidays ever.

Sorry, off-topic...

Is it, because Hitler was born on April 20th in 1889 in Austria and the allies had won against Nazi Germany?

Anyway... welcome to the board tgaucho! :)

thanks! :) i will definitely listen to those shows!

four twenty is the weed smokers holiday 'round these parts. As far as i can tell it's celebrated throughout north america . . or at least in urban and suburban north america . . i can't speak for the middle america/ rural crowd . . i'm not sure they smoke anyways

:dozey: this guy knows what i'm talkin' about

 that's right! It's also Hitler's birthday! Although no one seems to know exactly why 4/20 is what it is (the wikipedia article i posted above is promoting the San Rafael HS theory, which i've heard before, but seems kinda lame to be the actual beginning of such a widespread and fantastic holiday), the Hitler's birthday origin story is one of the most popular . . i must have heard it 10 or 12 times in college . . something along the lines of poetic irony; getting happy, happy with your friends and loved ones on the birthday of such a bad, bad man. I don't think that had anything to do with the actual origin of the celebration, but it's one of the "fun facts" about 4/20 that everyone seems to know.

Bottom line? It may sound silly and juvenile, but it's really all about love and friendship, and having a good good time with the people you care about. I've never seen anything rambunctious or negative go down on 4/20 . . and it's usually a good day to find small hippie gatherings and music festivals in your local park, which is a bonus. Always a good time :)

Next April the 20th stick your hand on your ear and your nose in the air and follow the sound of lighters lighting, stoners guffawing, and the sweet skunky aroma of bliss . . and don't forget to bring snacks (and rolling papers)!

also, thanks for the welcome! Man, it seems like people are pretty friendly around here, no? I'm sensing a lot of positivity from this community, and i like it. I joined because i like Coldplay's music a bunch and i don't have anyone to talk about it with, and i'm starting to be really glad that i did! cheers!

No problem, I can get a bit long winded, but hey, you asked. As for the holiday, I'm Canadian and I've never heard of it, but I've also never smoked pot, so... *shrug*

Glad you like it here. You seem to have come at the perfect time, long after one album is out and long before another one gets promoted, so you don't have to compete with 100 other people asking the same questions. Timing is everything...

I think he said on Zane Lowe show that he stole chord from song Boy from school (Hot Chip) and its called The Fall Of Man (or Mining On The Moon?) and Will rejected that because its sounds like Sunday Bloody Sunday, am I right?
