If you could have been born anywhere...

Where would it be?

Before you answer...

I know a lot of people on here are from all over the world, and there's a high chance a lot of people will say the UK, which is fine and all but say why. Not just single reasons, either.

Reason for this thread is it's something that I've thought about a lot. I've always lived in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and it's never ever been a problem for me until I got completely hooked on basketball. Now if someone asks me where I'd like to be the answer is the US before they can finish their sentance. For one reason. I know a lot about basketball now, and I know about the systems and what goes on. The high school basketball teams, state championships, college teams, professional etc. We have nothing like that over here. In the US there's like, high school teams in every school that all compete in games every week and that's like, the thing I'd like to have done more than anything in the world.

I mean, nearest basketball court to me is a 20 minute walk from my house, and even then it's covered in glass and stuff on the floor and there's no marking and the ground is uneven. It's really annoying that I have nowhere to play when I want. Every village should have a basketball court.

And TV!!! All of the best TV is American. My two favourite shows: 30 Rock and Scrubs. Both American, if I wanna see em I gotta stay up and download them, and it takes ages.

And oh Godddddd!! The Playoffs!! Playoff time. My favourite months of the year are March April May and June because it's the final months of the NBA year! But I can only watch games on weekends or repeats on Mondays cause of the time zone! I watch 4 games on a weekend if I can (they have early tip off times on weekends). I could watch basketball all day. I did last week.

There's some of the reasons I think I was born on the wrong side of the ocean. I've complained about this so much to anyone American that's had to listen to me go on about it.

You next.

Rant over.

:)

liverpool, i'm not just saying that i actually lived there. i'm gonna explain why later.

Oh, gooood thread

I think I am pretty satisfied with where I am now. SOmetimes it seems like shit and I complain, but when I think of having to live somewhere else... I think...It could be worse than here and probably is.

But if I had to pick another place it would have to involve free healthcare and lots of things to do and somewhere I could hop to another state/country and be totally immersed in a different culture. I mean, here... I could dirve/fly to another state and it's just about the same. Yes, states in the US definitely differ from one place to the next and blah blah...but we speak the same language, go to similar school systems, have the same stores and activities (ahem, none!).

But if I lived somewhere like the UK, I could fly over to France, or Spain or Germany and it would be great differences. Scenery to blow your mind. I am all about nature and I think it would be great to be somewhere in the middle of Europe. I think that idea may come from being around Americans. Americans travel, alot. And it is mostly like: "Oh, this summer we are vacationing in Europe" and everyone is like OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that is grand. It just seems like it is so completely different and more exciting over there because you better know Americans are bored out of their mind watching mindless hours of television and comsuming shit all day.

So yeah, anywhere in Europe please.

Reasons! Please. :)

Italy because the culture and the language and because it's in Europe... and the food too of course! :wacky:

Hmm. I'm not really happy with where I was born (Huntington, West Virginia) so this is an awesome question that is too hard for me to answer.

I actually think I remember my dad telling me not to tell anybody where I was born (jokingly, though).

it's between milan, stockholm, london, and east berlin...

hmm milan vs. stockholm...

milan....the fashion's just too good.

My city, well actually a town just outside my city, was rated No. 5 in best places to live in America last year. But I just don't think its that great. In America, I'd like to live in a city like New York. Having to compete for your success, the melting of cultures, the tall buildings, and buzz of the nightlife. But I couldn't live there, because the drivers are insane. And there's no way I could ever sacrifice my car like that.

Outside of America, I'd like to live in a coastal town of Australia. I love surfing, wildlife, and a laid-back atmosphere. A place I could just relax.

I don't know if this counts, but if I could pick time period to live in, it would be back in Ancient Greece. The birth of knowledge, where man first gave thought to existence. I would enroll in The Lyceum, and be a pupil of Aristotle, along with some kid name Alexander.

Mmmmh... That's a tough question...

I dunno really...

I'll think of it.

france..i like the language, culture, nature, everything...and england too...

hm. I don't know. If I think of it, I'm pretty satisfied with my country and the city itself - I mean, we're kinda close to the sea, the mountains, Italy and all. I live in a small country, but each year we get new stores, just like in other cities and I don't need to drive to Italy, just to buy some food like 10 years ago.

However, I'm very disappointed about the nightlife here, as it sucks. I'd rather have more bars, a discoteque with actually good music (we have enough crappy places all around anyway) and that's all. I don't miss university here as I'd like to become independent as soon as possible, and living with my parents as a student... naah, not good. I have enough of nature all around, and little dirt around as well.

However. If I wanted to change something, it would surely be the quality of products. Unfortunately things that come here from other countries are of worse quality than in Italy or Austria. So I'd move because of this to any western country, but it's not such a big deal.

I'm happy to live where I was born. :)

Hawaii specifically on the island of Kauai or Mauai.

The native people of the islands are absolutely the friendliest people in the world. It is the most gorgeous place ever and no one is in a bad mood. Every man, woman, and child has a smile on their face because they know that they are living in paradise.

Take for example the homeless, yes many people there are without actual houses, but are allowed to stay on the beach, so of course they are not angry about this, but rather enjoy being so close to the ocean.

I've told my parents before that if I were ever to go there again, I'd probably not come back. haha. Also because I have cousins there who left Michigan 25 years ago and never came back so they are always trying to convince us to move there as well. But to be born and raised there? That would be a dream come true.

Mmmmh... That's a tough question...

I dunno really...

I'll think of it.

Finally, I thought of it...

Well, I'd like to be born in Japan. I find their culture/architecture (and their cars:p) very interesting. The style of their houses (especially inside) is very nice, I love it. :nice: I'd have loved to see what remains from the Ancient Japan as well :)

Otherwise... I'd have chosen Italy, for the language/landscapes in Toscania :nice:

And for the food :P and for the nice islands/volcanos there...

Or England, cos I'd be able to speak English perfectly, I'd have visit London (why not:nice: :)) and probably I would have already been to a Coldplay gig :D

Me , I like born in France , Normandie , Rouen , because my boyfriend life in Rouen , so that's the ideal for me .

Or england , I love London ^^

Well, at the past, I'd say England...But I dunno, I started to think that I woudn't take the winter as I haaaate cold...So, I changed my view and thought about Spain or Portugal...I think their culture is pretty interesting and have something related to my own (wich I really like) and it would be nice to get in touch with them...Also I would be able to visit other wonderful countries of Europe as they're all pretty close to each other...So I could spend weekends traveling... :nice:

I've decided! I know you all were waiting for my answer, right?

Right? :P

Italy. Because I could go track down all my long-lost relatives. That sounds like fun.

Germany.

Probably even exactly at the same place where I was born....why?

Because I don't think I could have any better than where I'm living...I live in one of the most developed countries in the world...we've got democracy, human rights and not even the worst nature catastrophes...only to name a few advantages..

and why at exactly at the same place?

Because I live in one of the most beautiful areas in this country (it's not only me who says that hehe...)...we are pretty "safe" here...

so, I'm totally satisfied with my location.

And the main reason for that is that I feel so much at home here....when I go on holidays to another country it's nice of course....but I'm always oh so happy when I come home...

I think if I'd grown up in another country I'd be used to that and I couldn't imagine to live in another country...

so, if you asked "where do you want to go so badly?"

Grand Canyon would be the answer......but no I'd not want to be born there

liverpool, i'm not just saying that i actually lived there. i'm gonna explain why later.

i lived in a small village in the switzerland most of my life and i never liked living there. you dont have many options here, almost everybody leaves to find a job. but the thing i really dislike about it is the fact that everyone knows each other which could be a good thing. but it isnt where i live. there are so many people who are bored and all they do in their spare time is talk about each other. people invent rumours all the time, even if they dont know you at all. my parents work in the village therefore people i've never known talked about our family which is incredibly annoying.

i always wanted to go to england and i spent my holidays in london when i was like 13. i decided that i wanted to go to england as an exchange student when i was about 15 but my parents didnt let me go. however i finished school in summer last year and i decided to work in england for sometime. i didnt really know where to go but i knew i wanted to go to a city and i couldnt imagine living in london i thought the city was way too big. i imagined living there would be a bit of a culture shock and i also knew a girl who went there as an au pair and hardly got to know anyone apart from foreign students she met at language school. we had an english assisant at our school and i asked him what he'd recommend me to do to find a job while i'm still home and i also asked him where he'd go. he said manchester was the place to go which isnt really a suprise because he was a manc. i just looked up things about differents places in the internet and i applied in different towns, most of them were in the the north. i hoped i could either go to liverepool, manchester or leeds but i had to wait and see what options i had. i eventually got a job in liverpool and i was really happy so i went there.

theres lots of aspects i like about the city. first of all people are very friendly. most people i met were really open-minded [unless where i'm from] and it made friends really quickly. i also like the fact that you'll meet people from all over the world. the city is great for shopping and i also like its nightlife. there are lots of nice bars and pubs and also a few decent clubs. people tend to go out a lot often during the week as well. one thing that i really like about liverpool or maybe its england in general that theres a lot of live music in pubs and theres several decent local bands. liverpool's close to the sea, it doesnt take you long if you wanna go to the beach. theres also two parks which are very nice especially in summer. it doesnt take you long if you wanna go to other cities like chester, manchester or birmingham either. the city isnt as big as london, people seem friendlier and less stressed still its quite a big city and its cheaper to live there as well.

i worte quite a lot and i could go on. i really miss this place.

Hmm I absolutely adore life in Australia but otherwise I'd say Italy. I would love to live in the Northern Italian region of Trentino for the culture and the food and the people. My father was born in a tiny village there and the way he describes growing up their sounds so surreal.

i like the place where i was born, which is actually the place where i live now.

Frankfurt, Germany.

of course there are many other countries to explore and stuff, but life here is pretty ok.

it's a big city and i'm pretty happy, which won't keep me from moving away though.

i like the school system here to be honest. you get very good education over here, which means that i'll have good chances in my future.

wouldn't mind having been born in scandinavia though.

finland or iceland would've been nice :nice:

i would say tahiti ( i know its kinda odd).... but its so small beautiful all the beaches, paradise and warm weather and a small population. i feel like it i was born there i would always have an excuse to go back there during times in my life. If i grew up there i feel like i wouldnt have a care in the world, maybe my parents would have got along better and i also would be proud to call that home. I think there i wouldnt have absorbed all media and social problems. But i stilll love growing up here in canada and im proud to say im canadian and that i was born here.

i wanna live everywhere and visit all countries, specialy England because all my favourite bands are there and i love this country

PS:  maybe to study ( i hope very soon:D )
