It's official: shell suits are the worst fashion crime - ever

Shell suits are the biggest fashion no-no of all time, according to a new survey.

 

The suits, favoured by pensioners and 'The Scousers' characters in Harry Enfield's comedy show, came top in a poll of 1,500 women for fashion website http://www.missbutterfly.com.

It is perhaps no surprise that jeans were rated the best fashion item of all time.

The denim trousers have become a must-have for every wardrobe after they were invented by Levi Strauss in the mid 1800s.

Harry Enfield's Scousers made shell suits famous

 

Since becoming popular with teenagers in the 1950s, jeans have been available in all shapes and sizes, including low waisted, flared, boot cut and skinny leg. Second in the poll is the versatile Little Black Dress.

The LBD, as it is affectionately known, is a staple item for every woman's wardrobe because its classic look means it never goes out of fashion.

The iconic mini skirt is in third place followed by holiday essential, the bikini, in fourth.

Knee high boots are the fifth best fashion item of all time followed by flared trousers.

Flares became popular among the hippies in the 1960s and were made famous by John Travolta in disco film Saturday Night Fever.

But after dying out, they made a comeback in the 1990s and all standard trousers now have a slight flare. Stiletto shoes have been named as the seventh best fashion item, followed by the more comfortable option, trainers.

The ever practical polo neck is at number nine while the trendy trench coat is tenth.

But at the opposite end of the scale, the shell suit was named as the worst fashion item of all time by the women who took part in the poll.

Although they were first worn by those who took part in a sport, they eventually found their way into everyone's closets.

But after being seen on pensioners, the 80s trend soon became less popular before dying out completely.

The poncho is at number two followed by another 80's fad, leg warmers, completing the top three.

Other fashion faux-pas featuring in the line-up included clumpy clogs, tank tops and the Spice Girls trademark - platform shoes.

And completing the top ten was the Ugg Boot - made famous after boho babes Kate Moss and Sienna Miller were spotted wearing them.

A spokesman for http://www.missbutterfly.com said: "I'm not surprised jeans came out top, they are stylish, hard-wearing and go with anything - they're a staple wardrobe item.

"On the other hand, shell-suits definitely deserve to be voted the worst fashion item of all time, I can't believe how much they took off in the 80's - let's just hope they don't make a revival."

bleghhhhhhhhhh :sick: I can't stand those shoes! And I HAVE seen the ballet flat versions of those. I didn't think they could get worse but I had to eat that idea up!

They're hella comfortable. Just like walking on a cloud. There is a shop in South Melbourne that sells every kind of Crocs imaginable.

Not that I know of Rick but there is a whole shop that sells the brand! If you are looking for live crocodiles try far north Queensland! :D
