Online video ripping

Featured Replies

I need to rip some video off the CNN video website, what is the best software to use for this?

Not sure, but I'm wondering whats the best software for ripping off youtube...

For CNN and most streaming videos, possibly Fraps which is a video capturing program.

If a screen capture video is acceptable the program Fraps is an option (although it costs money) , no idea if a freeware alternative is available . But you`ll need to find the correct URL for the stream if you wish to save the original streamed video for this (unless its a microsoft media in which case , it`s right click and select Properties to get its URL) . The URL will start with MMS: or RTPS: (these are the streaming servers) . Once you have the URL , get NET TRANSPORT to download the stream (look for V1.87 as its a non time limited version).

To get proper URL - packet sniffer software required -> SnoopURL

To download the stream -> Net Transport v1.87

or

To video screen capture the video -> Fraps or other alternatives

You`ll need to Google for these programs , and also probably for guides to use them , once you learn how to do it once , its easy peasy lemon squeasy ;)

In theory the video file should be downloaded to your temp internet files, so it's a case of finding that file.

Had a look the CNN site , my previous notes are the old school of getting anything . For CNN I`d use Firefox and use the plugin DownloadHelper , CNN uses flash video , depending on implementation it can sometimes be found in the cache , but to be honest I wouldn`t bother when Firefox and that plugin means you just select what flash videos to download on the page you are on - no mincing about at all . However you get the videos , you will also require a flash video player to play them as seperate files (use Google for one) .
