Get out Charles - Welsh nationalists threaten Prince over holiday home

A gang of Welsh nationalists have ordered Prince Charles to leave a holiday home he has bought for himself and Camilla.

The heir to the throne has been threatened with terrorist attacks if he does not move out of the farmhouse hideaway in the Welsh hills.

The group behind the threats - the Welsh Republican Army - is believed to be a splinter faction of the Free Wales Army, which attempted unsuccessfully to blow Charles up 35 years ago.

A letter purporting to have been written by Welsh Republican Army members warned that the Prince will become a 'legitimate target' if he doesn't leave his Welsh estate by December 11 this year.

The letter is signed off by 'Rebecca', believed to be a reference to the nineteenth century Rebecca Riots which spread across Wales.

The riots were caused by social, political and religious unrest among locals frustrated by English rule.

The police say they are treating the warning as a 'serious' matter and have launched an investigation.

The threat is the latest in a series of problems Charles has had with his new estate. He has already faced planning objections from neighbours and a delay to building work because the mansion is inhabited by Welsh bats.

The threat was made in a letter sent to a local newspaper office in Llandudno, North Wales, on Wednesday.

The letter said: "We, the representatives of the Army Council of the Welsh Republican Army call upon Charles Windsor the English Prince and usurper of the Title Prince of Wales, to vacate his Welsh mansion Llwynywormwood, Myddfai, Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, by December 11th 2007 or become a legitimate target for Republican action.

"We further call upon Mr Windsor to relinquish his claim to the title Prince of Wales. Failure to accept the terms of this warning will result in the most severe represcusions (sic)."

Police have said they are taking the threats seriously and are currently investigating them.

The WRA models itself on the Irish republican movement, using the IRA's manifesto as a model for its members.

The body is affiliated to the Free Wales Army, which tried to storm Caernafon Castle in North Wales to stop the investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales in 1969.

Two other activists tried to blow up the royal train which was carrying the Prince to the ceremony.

Alwyn Jones and Goerge Taylor blew themselves up instead when the bomb they were planning to put on the railway line went off by accident.

Head of the Free Wales Army Julian Cayo Evans was jailed over the incidents.

Since then nationalists have carried out a campaign against people who buy holiday homes in Wales. Several holiday homes have been burned to the ground by arsonists.

Prince Charles bought the 192-acre estate of Llwynywormwood in November last year.

Since then he has faced a series of problems with the property. His plans to develop it into a holiday complex were thrown into disarray because of bats living in the roof space.

And locals objected to his plans because they said regulations did not allow such renovations.

A spokesman for Clarence House said he could not discuss security issues.
