How much does New York cost?

Featured Replies

You know ... hostels, transport with metro or something, food, drink, museums ...

:)

NYC is kind of an expensive place to visit. hotels are insanely expensive by american standards; i think decent ones will run you about $130 a night. hostels are better, obsviously, and i've never been in one in NYC as i live less than an hour away, but i hear they're pretty dingy and sketchy and gross compared to other american ones. food is also ridiculously overpriced, as well as gas (petrol). transport by metro (subway) is pretty cheap, but cabs are crazy expensive. museums i'm not so sure about because i've always gone with school and never have actually paid, but i think they're probably between $20 and $50? other events will be even more expensive. all in all, it's just an overpriced place.

of course, this is "expensive" on american terms. brits and other europeans FLOCKED over here on the weekends before xmas to do all their shopping because goods are a fraction of the price they are in europe given the exchange rate from the pound/euro to the dollar. so maybe to a european it wouldn't be expensive? i'm not so sure; economics aren't my thang :D

That's pretty much correct. Think of it as a half-price city or BOGOF to a brit ;)

I just booked a trip to Manhattan and paid $300 a night for a hotel. The rates are insane. I think you can get a dorm type room at a hostel for around $50 a night and for a 1-2 person private hostel room around $150 a night. Most of the museums are around $20 each. Metro card is around $10 a day I think, but if you stay in downtown, most stuff is with in walking distance.

thanks, that helps a bit!

my two friends (who are nuts, believe me. they mostly talk in english just because its fun and one of them got me into radiohead, introduced me to neil young etc. and she's crazy :D) are planning a trip (well not quite yet) and i've been kinda invited to go along.

if i get money etc. the most of it will go for my camera tho. but ... oh well. :smug:

I went in September and it cost £1800 for two people for 7 days, I then took £1000 spending money.

Depends when you go though, I went at an expensive time of the year. The cheapest time is Jan-April. Gets more expensive as you head towards 4th July, then into summer and after that it's heading towards xmas.

If you book well in advance and save up is well worth the money though.

I didn't get the train once, we walked everywhere, if you like to explore it's easy. Might take you an hour or two but you get to take in the city and make a day of it.

That was EVERYTHING. Return flights and hotel. The hotel was on Broadway and as I said was an expensive time of year. Prob won't be that much for you.

New York is probably the most expensive place in the U.S. to visit, but it's definately worth it. There is so much to see and do around the clock. I have a lot of friends in the city and go there from time to time so if you have any specific questions I'd be happy to answer them.

Im still going. I want to go to Canada too. What hotel are you stating at angie?

Yeah, I guess it's really worth going there!! Unfortunately, I won't go there because of some complications my friends and I had. SO we'll go to England instead.

But I WILL go to NYC one day! :veryangry:

:)

which one is more expensive London or New York?

Slovenia also joined the euro this year, don't they?

1 € = 1,54 $

So I guess NY will never become cheaper than now for us Europeans! :D

I had such a great time. Stayed at the Courtyard Marriott on 3rd Ave between 52nd and 53rd. Went to Letterman, museums, Central Park, walked and walked and walked. Ate and ate and ate. :laugh3:

I have been looking at flights and stuff just in case I get a ticket to the free show and it will run me around $900 to go. Not so free for me but I hope i frickin get one. :D
