May 28, 200818 yr X&Y is a great progression of the work they did in AROBTTH and Parachutes I think. BUT I definitely would have had a different track listing. Something like this: 1. Square One 2. How You See The World 3. White Shadows 4. Fix You 5. Talk 6. X & Y 7. Speed Of Sound 8. The World Turned Upside Down 9. Gravity 10. Low 11. The Hardest Part 12. Things I Don't Understand 13. Swallowed In The Sea 14. 'Til Kingdom Come I would have put A Message on but I think 'Til Kingdom Come is the better song and between it and Gravity I think A Message would have been overkill. Sleeping Sun was a song I hated when I first heard but have since come to really like it in a kinda funky way - its a very different Coldplay song I think. I somehow can't ever imagine them having played it live. Certainly the setlist for X&Y era concerts struck too much of a "Greatest Hits" compilation rather than changing, diverse and flexible arragements of their songs, b-sides and new tracks etc. What If? is good to listen to a few times but then becomes leaden I think. Its so slow moving at the start that I think it broke the frantic pace set by Square One and negatively coloured people's opinions of the record. Proof is a lovely little song but really more a b-side than album worthy. The b-sides I did put on I did so cause they are really really great in my opinion and SHOULD have made it. Also, since they did the whole thing of having the first few tracks X1, X2, etc and then the later ones Y1 etc its interesting to see the difference between How You See The World and The World Turned Upside Down as they both seem to have big ideas and big themes. Other songs that they performed during the AROBTTH tour, like Moses, Ladder to the Sun, etc would be interesting contenders but since no studio recordings are available to us (or that I know of) I left them off. Anyone have any preferred combinations?
