Are We Too Hard On X&Y?

Featured Replies

I hate Fix You. Could they make a worse song.

Yes. They called it "Shiver." But I think I'm pretty much alone with my opinion of that song so I won't say any more about it. Fix You is OK, but probably the worst song on that album; though maybe I just think that because it's way over-hyped.

As a collection of songs, I'd say X & Y is their best one so far; they don't fit together as well as the songs on the other two, though.

I don't get how people don't like X&Y. It is my favorite Coldplay album. Parachutes does have Don't Panic, Shiver, Yellow, Life is for Living, etc. But I dont like Sparks that much, I've gotten sick of Trouble, and I was never in love with the song Parachutes. On AROBTTH I only love the songs In My Place, Scientist, CLocks, and maybe AROBTTH. But I love every song on X&Y. From the odd yet catchy Square One, to Speed of Sound, and especially Swallowed in the Sea. Even The Hardest part is a fantastic song. So I dont get how people can say that X&Y is nowhere near as good as the first two.

BTW: Fix You is just as good as Yellow or Clocks in my opinion.

I don't think we're to hard on X&Y, or "we", some people say it's their favourite album. :stunned::confused: I really don't get it. Shure, X&Y was nice, catchy, wellproduced popsongs, but where's the dept?

Parachutes and AROBTTH was also nice catchy wellproduced popsongs, but at the same time they were so much more. They were intense and atleast to me they sound like they truly come from the heart.

X&Y sounds more forced, and not as honest. Songs written with brain instead of heart.

Don't misunderstand me now, I don't hate X&Y. I actually think it's a good album, just not as good as Parachutes and AROBTTH.

And I have this feeling in my stomach that Viva la vida or Death and all his friends will be better then all the prevoius albums. I sincerely hope so. :)

Personally, I like "Fix You" and "Shiver." Those two songs (in fact, the whole X&Y album) got me through some very depressing times. I love the X&Y album. It ranks in my top and my personal favorite is "Square One," (Is there anybody out there who, is lost and hurt and lonely too? Are they bleeding all your colors into one and then you come undone? As if you'd been run through some catapult had fired at you. You wonder if your chance will ever come, or if you're stuck in square one?)

Perfect song to describe me. I really love X&Y and that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

¡Viva la Vida!

♪ Kat!

Square One, okay opener.

What If, a little tad too slow for the rest of the album

White Shadows, one of the fastest and best songs on the album

Fix You, where the album fails for me. It doesn't work.

Talk, "yay"

X&Y, one of the better songs on the album

Speed of Sound, the most generic on there definitely

A Message, one that doesn't really work either

Low, decent song

The Hardest Part... well I don't see why this was on there

Swallowed In The Sea, one of the better ballads on the album

Twisted Logic, probably the best song

'Til Kingdom Come, best ballad on there

The ballads undid what would have been an otherwise awesome album me thinkz...

As a whole I think X&Y does get unfairly knocked. But there are some songs on it that I just never listen to, and don't inspire me emotionally. Maybe they've got a good hook (pretty much everything Chris Martin & Co. come up with have awesome hooks) but the lyrics and production are lacking.

I hope this next album sounds bohemian with tons of different influences and noises you don't hear every day - the kind of thing Brian Eno would encourage. More emphasis should be placed on the lyrics, too.

I don't know while people stay saying that X&Y is'nt a good album.

Why?

I have one thing you should do NOW...

Go listen Square One, What If, White Shadows, A Message, Low, Speed Of Sound, Talk, Till Kingdom Come, Twisted Logic, X&Y, the best songs of the album..

And then crit it over... Sure you love it.....:sneaky:

Yes, oh i forgot Fix You, Swallowed in The Sea, and dont forget How You See The World.... the best X&Y songs!

in my opinion the GOOD XandY tracks are

sqare one

white shadows

fix you

talk

X&Y

SOS

A Message

Low

Twisted Logic

Yes, oh i forgot Fix You, Swallowed in The Sea, and dont forget How You See The World.... the best X&Y songs!

How you see the world isn't even on X&Y. It's a great song do, I love the live version that is the hardest part B-side.

I did get you guys. IMO Fix You is a great song. As well as What if?, Swallowed in the sea, Till Kingdom come, Talk and X&Y.

My fav. album? Honestly, I don't know.

How you see the world isn't even on X&Y. It's a great song do, I love the live version that is the hardest part B-side.

Yes it is, in Japan as a bonus track!

X&Y was my first ever Coldplay album. I bought it after hearing Speed of Sound because Speed of Sound was incredible. It's still one of my most played songs on iTunes. It has a rock edge that the albums before it don't really have, and quite possibly the most underrated Coldplay song is Twisted Logic. The lyrics, the music, the vocals, I love it when the guitar picks up towards the end of the song, it sounds so epic and if you take away Til Kingdom Come, it's a great closer for the album.

I love the other two albums, don't get me wrong, but X&Y was my first love and always will be. Viva La Vida scares me a little bit for some reason. I wasn't blown away by Violet Hill, although it was a great song. X&Y will just always be special to me.

^Can't blame you, it's a fantastic album. it's my favorite, but Im having a funny feeling Ill like VLVODAAHF more than any album ever

To answer the question... Yes.

X&Y has kind of a special place in my heart. It was not only my 1st Coldplay album, it was my gateway into music. I bought it on a whim after hearing Speed of Sound on the radio and being blown away by it. After listening to the record multiple times, I got the other CP albums. After that, I began to look up similar artists and purchase albums from them and, lo & behold, I've become an avid music fan.

I'm not blind to the album's shortcomings -- too long, lyrics a little too generic, etc -- but it's still a fine record from where I stand. And I'm also glad that the boys are taking a different direction with the fourth album.

.

It's not their best, but it's still a great album musically. And I agree some of the lyrics weren't great, but they were heartfelt.

SOS was the song that started one of the best summers in my life. I fell in love, recorded most of my album and had a hell of a great summer with that album as the soundtrack, so it will always be special!

And imo, A Message is one of the best Coldplay songs EVER!

Actually, I said 'Yes', but it's a matter if opinion really, so it's impossible to answer. If you didn't like it as much as the other albums then fair enough, that's your opinion. In my own opinion I think people are hard on it, but I'm sure there are lot of people that could make a fabulous argument for why people should be hard on it. See what I'm saying? Good :D

Please don't say too long. Compared to the 10 track albums every band is coming out with now, X&Y had a longer-lasting appeal to it than the next album probably will. In my opinion, too many bands are short-changing consumers by not filling up the albums with hits (especially Christian rock, which I love but is going downhill because of this). I hate to hear that Coldplay is doing the same with a 10-track tracklist for Viva La Vida.

I was agreeing with your post, not arguing it. I think you're absolutely right.:D

Starts off well, but then has a big dip between recovering for til kingdom come

Yes, I'm a big Johnny Cash fan too and this song was a borderline Christian song for Coldplay which I loved. I know Johnny Cash certainly meant it to be interpreted that way.

Sorry I wasn't arguing your post either lol, I was just thinking out loud and saying to myself well, it's not fair for me to say yes everyone is unfair on it because everyone has their own opinion on it, just like me saying 'yes everyone is unfair' is my opinion, and I meant 'you' as in the people that don't think they are too hard on X&Y, not one person in particular. I'm talking nonsense now, sorry, just clearing that up, didn't want to piss anyone off. I'm getting Keane-forum syndrome - that's quite a fragile place at the moment and you have to be careful what you say otherwise someone will pull a cyber-water-gun out on you or something like that. Anyway, I'll be quiet now :P
