Could this be Coldplay's "Achtung Baby"?

Featured Replies

Being a huge coldplay fan as well as a huge U2 fan, I got to thinkin. With all the buzz about how different this new album is with its sound could this do for the band what achtung baby did for U2? Could this be the album that completely reinvents the way people think of coldplay? I don't know, its just a thought. I hope so.

P.S. I really hope all of you guys and gals have listened to Achtung baby to get what I am talking about. If you have not listened to it, do it. its a classic album. you will not be disappointed.:D

I don't know, I kinda liked Joshua Tree a little better. Achtung Baby is growing on me though.

I'd like to think this will be their Revolver, personally. Now that I love.

Since Achtung! is German for Attention!, the new Coldplay release would have to be named in German as well to be similar:laugh3:... Well, maybe - who knows - it's a Eno production...

I think that's exactly what they're hoping for...probably why they went with Eno in the first place. And yes, it's a great album, although The Unforgettable Fire's still my favorite.:)

It's got the whole foreign language in the title thing going for it too. :P

I think it will be they are going in the opposite direction Gorillaz did with Demon Days. Instead of getting less experimental and more mainstream, they're getting more experimental and becoming a little weirder. But because of the popularity the already have, I can guarantee that this album will be No. 1 in the UK no doubt.

stole my words exactly :D

Tracie hit it right on the nose, thats why they brought in Eno

I hope it'll be their Revolver too... that album is so good

:wacky:

I hope its not their revolver, that had some crappy tracks along with the good stuff.

I hope you're right, something more experimental could really expand coldplay's potential and fan base as well. they got something to prove here, this album could either make or break coldplay... and i don't know about you but i hope it brings them to a whole new level.

If you take it on a purely chronological basis, this coldplay album is homologous to U2's "The Unforgettable Fire", which also was a huge re-invention for U2, and also the exact point at which Brain Eno was brought it, right after the third album. It has to do with what the guys themesleves are bringing up lately, the fact that they see their first three albums as a TRILOGY, after three albums, RE-INVENTION.

Is it a pattern?

It has been for U2:

1 Boy

2 October

3 War

RE-INVENTION (Brian Eno comes in)

1 The Unforgettable Fire

2 The Joshua Tre

3 Rattle And Hum

RE-INVENTION

1 Achtung Baby

2 Zooropa

3 Pop

RE-INVENTION

1 All That You Can't Leave Behind

2 How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb

3 ? (next album coming out this fall)

Coldplay is here:

1 Parachutes

2 A Rush Of Blood To The Head

3 X&Y

RE-INVENTION (Brian Eno comes in)

1 Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends

2 ?

3 ?

...and so on until completing the cycle.

Believe it or not, The Beatle's career follows exactly the same pattern. Both The Beatles, and U2, went full circle, completed a cycle; and Coldplay is apparently destined to do the same, thus, completing, a greater TRIAD: Beatles-U2-Coldplay.

I hope I don't sound too arrogant. I have been working on this for a while, and I am convinced now that Coldplay is the THIRD BAND. It has to do with the highest purpose of Rock n' Roll, and Coldplay has taken on the responsibility.

Peace and Love.

Is the order in the universe? Yes, but it's never quite the same outcome every time.. Glad someone's trying to make sense of this - I'd go quite insane doing so.

oh without a doubt. I think its interesting too, that when U2 was making Achtung Baby they were experimenting and inspired by a lot of hip-hop. Bono said how much he was into african-american music. so they experiment with a lot of hip-hop and beats and such. now with coldplay they get inspired by latin music. kinda interesting. kinda goes along with what moshepop said, which was a great post my man. great analysis!

Precisely, that is why with the The Beatles career and U2's career, you see the same pattern of development, but different albums, different type of music, it's not the same result, but the same pattern shaping the progression, until the progression is completed. What is true is the fact that not always the progression is completed, and it remains to be seen if Codlplay will be able to do so. I believe the will.

Except that your including U2's Rattle and Hum a movie album, but then you don't include all the beatles movie albums. That ruins your pattern.

Movie or not movie that is not the most important thing, it is the music. It is the fact that aproximately every three albums there is a transition, a change of formula. And anyway what do you mean? which are The Beatles movie albums: a Hard Day's night, Help, Magical Mistery Tour, Yellow Submarine, Let it Be(Get Back). All of them are included. And as I said, it is the music not the movies.

Well they know even if they made an album which is just 30 minutes of random noise it will sell in the millions.

We still haven't heard any full songs from the new U2 album yet but the band and Daniel Lanois (Eno's co-producer) have several times stated that this will be a departure from the last two albums. Adam Clayton (the bassist) said they didn't want to go back into the studio making the rock 'n' roll album - part II. The Edge (lead guitarist) said it's a very diverse material they're working on and Bono described it as Polyrhytmic while Lanois said it was going to be "handplayed and electro". It sounds like we will indeed see a reinvention with this album, but until it's in the shops we won't know for sure. It could very well be pre-album hype for all we know... But my point is that U2 are possibly breaking the trilogy theory with this album.

I think you've basically picked 3 bands with a pattern that arn't even closely related to each other (not even all british) and assumed theres a pattern. Most bands realise not to make the same album 3 times.

The Beatles have different discographies for each continent anyway, their first genre pushing album Rubber Soul was followed by Revolver, then Stg Pepper which was pure experimentation, there is no pattern of 2 albums then a revolution to the beatles.

U2, well The Unforgettable fire / War and The Joshua Tree (3 consecutive albums are pretty similar to me)

And Coldplay, well I think X&Y's a big departure from the first 2.

I think you'll find there is no higher purpose to rock music except that the artists want to push the boundies. And I wouldn't choose U2 and Coldplay against the almighty experimental beatles anyway. Escapecially when U2's experiments with electronics were horrible albums.

And Im starting to doubt this is Coldplay's Auchtung baby, looks more like their Urban Hymn's to me.
