Could this be Coldplay's "Achtung Baby"?

Featured Replies

We still haven't heard any full songs from the new U2 album yet but the band and Daniel Lanois (Eno's co-producer) have several times stated that this will be a departure from the last two albums. Adam Clayton (the bassist) said they didn't want to go back into the studio making the rock 'n' roll album - part II. The Edge (lead guitarist) said it's a very diverse material they're working on and Bono described it as Polyrhytmic while Lanois said it was going to be "handplayed and electro". It sounds like we will indeed see a reinvention with this album, but until it's in the shops we won't know for sure. It could very well be pre-album hype for all we know... But my point is that U2 are possibly breaking the trilogy theory with this album.

Yes that is true, about U2 breaking the trilogy, but it is the same thing with The Beatles at that point in time, I mean, ABBEY ROAD was definite departure from the basic raw sounds of White Album, and Let it Be.

I definitely am very open minded regarding the connection, and the possibility of Coldplay as the "third band." While it may seem only to be speculation, its obvious that there are some undeniable connections between the bands. U2, especially Bono, have always looked up to The Beatles as the pinnacle of artistic music, for all their interests and influences from different artists, and Coldplay look at U2 and The Beatles in a similar way. Whether this ascends rock music to a platform of a different kind is yet to be seen, but its obvious that Coldplay seems destined to make art and music of a caliber of these two bands. How I'd love to see all the detractors realize that they've been denying the defining band of their generation.

P.S. Surprised to find you here, Moises :)

It's possible to predict some things with a reasonable degree of accuracy, but music and bands? Intertwined with all the social phenomenons and forces at play in the world - we shall see!:)

I'm guessing the album may have more of a Latin twist to it - perhaps the name, and perhaps in part the audience has grown; although, it is just a name - could be something completely different. Oliver Twist seems to be Coldplay's musical trade-mark.

oh without a doubt. I think its interesting too, that when U2 was making Achtung Baby they were experimenting and inspired by a lot of hip-hop. Bono said how much he was into african-american music. so they experiment with a lot of hip-hop and beats and such. now with coldplay they get inspired by latin music. kinda interesting. kinda goes along with what moshepop said, which was a great post my man. great analysis!

Yes, that does seem to be the case - very much so! I was watching a PBS special on a famous African-American writer from the 1920's-1950's (I'm racking my brain, but her name is not popping up in my mind right now..) - and she was attending some sort of Baptist revival church where they were experimenting with newer rhythms using tambourines, and it sounded so much like U2's "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" in the beginning, I was quite surprised! But then again, Rock & Roll is basically an outgrowth of African Rhythms and Irish Sand Dances - since wayy back in the 1800's..

And yes - Coldplay's fascination with Latin music probably has them fired-up. What this new album will sound like will, if nothing else, come as a surprise!

Chuck, even though we don't realize about it, every thing in this world or universe is constrained to the same laws of development. Meaning, when there is a process going on, it follows the same pattern, for everything. And if you are seeking to make progress with every album that you put out, a progression will take place, Inevitably. The thing is that, first, not all the bands are seeking to make progress with every album, and second, from the ones that do seek progress, not all of them have the inner strength to make it happen every single time; they might get lost trying to do it. So, my thing is that not only there is the progression of a band coming full circle, like The Beatles or U2, but that Coldplay might be the Third Band to complete the whole, greater, bigger, all encompassing progression of Rock. Messianic?, Yes indeed.

Could VLV be their 'Achtung Baby'?

with the Eno Thing,

the fact is that we WILL have lots of Unforgettable Fire/U2 comparisons from critcs

from what we ve heard so far, i don't think there's a real 'sound like' with the 1984 album, UF is too much eighties marked (the keyboards, the drums) and has nothing to do with 2008 Coldplay...except that they have the same producer

i would much more agree for an "Achtung Baby" comparison, not in terms of production itself (AB is soo much darker than anything) but in the way the Bands are pushing their limits, the limits of their sound...and are throwing away some tricks, gimmiks and overseen habits....

the thing happens approximatly in the same pèriod of both artists carreers, 10 years after their débuts (1980>1992 for U2, 1998>2008 for Coldplay) and after they both "have ruled the world" in terms of sales...with the same amount of lovers/haters

i personnaly think that Chris & his mates have undertstand that they are not Under-Radiohead or Under-U2 or Under-anything...they have come to a point where they HAVE to break with the falsetto thing, the lanscinant piano melodrama and some other 'déjà vu' aspects of their music...and stick to the essence of their music with a different way of thinking their sound, just like the irish did by burning the Joshua tree in 1992

so that makes me come to the conclusion, unless the rest of the album is complete crap, that the boys can become even bigger thant they are, for the critics, the people and even some of their bashers

oups:P...yeah, with the number of new threads each day, i haden't noticied this one...sorry dudes!

The difference between Rattle and Hum and Achtung Baby is still a lot bigger than the difference between X&Y and the new songs we've heard so far.

It doesn't really make sense to compare albums from different bands, but it's fun.:P
