Hey everyone! I'm glad to see you're all as pumped as i am for the new album... And while i've been losing sleep (in excitement) over it, a thought crossed my mind so i thought i'd share it, and please let me know if this topic has already been dealt with...

 

A while ago we kept hearing that this would be the album that "everyone would remember Coldplay by", and "the greatest piece of music ever written" and that it would contain a song that "everyone had to hear before they die", but i haven't heard much along those lines recently. in fact we've been hearing quite the opposite - chris saying things like "not everyone's gonna like it" and "if it's shit (even though it's not...)".

 

I'm just wondering if the band is:

(a) not talking it up as much so that we can be the judges of how fantastic it is, or

(b) retreating from optimism into realism after having realised that, as great as it is, it's not the best piece of music ever.

 

I'm hoping that either it's (a), or there's just as much hype and somehow i managed to overlook it... Anyone have anything to say about it?

 

Also, even though it's probably abit early to make the call, any thoughts on which song might be the one that we all have to hear before we die?

because it's a VERY bold statement for them to make.

 

and we know how anxious and pessemistic chris can get about releasing new music.

 

though, in reflection... they said X&Y was reinventing the wheel.

Yeah, I agree. Didn't the same thing happen with "X & Y"? It was kind of the same: some people liked it, some didn't. I loved it, though. =)

I think when they said it would be an album that would remind everyone that theyre the greatest band in the world, they meant more of it will remind their fans of why they are so good. This album will be great in the eyes of all coldplay fans, its just other music fans might not like it as much. Don't panic :D the album will be everything we're expecting and more...

i think chris is always a bit insecure when it comes to coldplay's music.

like when he once told an interviewer that uncool 15-year-old kids listen to their music and get beaten up for it. :laugh3:

he is just modest, i suppose. and he does tend to overstate a lot.

e.g. when he announced richard ashcroft at live 8...

Cant wait :) X&Y was such a great album for me, loved every song (apart from swallowed..), if the album is anywhere near as good, i'll be pleased :)

Chris is all over the place emotionally, and it just depends on the day, what he's going to say. He's always been unpredictable, and he's always made bold statements, only to retract them later. (Think Brit Awards,lol) I doubt he really thinks it's the best album ever since he gives that honour to so many other artists (U2, REM, RH).

 

I have an odd theory now about him saying it contains a song everyone should hear before they die. Maybe, since there are so many references to death, he meant there's a message in the lyrics that we should hear...a view of life and death that may be informative or comforting. Just a theory though.

Artists hardly ever think much of their own work...these guys consistently make good music despite lots of noticeable changes to their style, so I wouldn't worry about it.
