Are you curious about...

music groups that were formed/established when you were born?

music that your parents listened when they were you age?

i'm just curious about it, i do listen some bands that were established just the same year as i was born, bands that are still on: Manic street preachers, radiohead, cypress hill, no doubt, roxette.

and i am curious also about the music that my parents listen to.

i've realised that goes the same with other artists that i like... most them were born in the 70's, and i see most the music they say that had influenced them are 70's bands and bands of their first teen age time (80's).

i wonder if it goes the same for you coldplayers.

feel free to discuss. :)

My mother LITERALLY thought that rock music was 'of the devil', so I didn't listen to the same bands as her...except the Beatles. She liked them for a while in the 60s.

But I LOVE Genesis, and they formed the year I was born. I wonder what life was like for them since they were all in their teens/twenties the year I was born. It's a look in to a part of music history that I can't obviously experience for myself. Very interesting thread, Ari. I can't wait to see other ppl's replies.:)

I enjoy listening to David Bowie, The Carpenters, and the likes each sunday morning in the kitchen with my parents. They have good taste!

well my mum is a HUGE david bowie fan and that has definately spread of on me...my dad's a big bob dylan fan but i dont like him as much as bowie...bowie is a legend! :D

My mom absolutely loves Pink Floyd and The Eagles, and I kinda like them also..

My dad.. well, I don't think he listens to music at all..

About bands that were formed about the same time I was born (1987).. .well, I haven't had the luck to find one...

ahh but I've started to like The Animals... I saw them on "7 ages of Rock" Vh1 special... and I thought they were great.. after that I downloaded most of their songs and they are just awesome!!

I like some of the stuff my parents like: CCR, The Guess Who, Bruce Cockburn...

when i was born, there were britney spears, aliyah, and so on. but im curious with aliyah. she is very good singer though she was dead in the plane :(

My dad was able to influence me on a couple of bands; Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd, but appart from that I don't really listen to much of the older stuff. As for bands that were formed around the time that I was born there might be one or two. None that I can think of right now, but I can safely say that the majority of the bands I listen to today were formed from 1998 -> today.

when i was born bands like barneaked ladies oasis and radiohead were forming so i'd say yes to that one!

and my parents listened to beatles, the who, led zep and stuff like that so yes agian!

My mom grew up in Germany and there was never anything but classical in her house. Her first album was of mozart with little biographical quips between the pieces. But she did hear some from her friends, and when she came to the united states became attached 60s rock bands like Fleetwood Mac. My brother bought her 'rumours' last christmas and its some decent stuff.

My Dad grew up late 50s, early 60s and while he does really like the beatles, he favors stuff like elvis and the everly brothers. All of whom he records covers of on our boss recorder. I appreciate most of his music, and every now and then we come across a song that we both adore, but we still have very different tastes.

There's a cool website:

No.1 songs on this date: UK and US

You can enter any date from 1940 onwards and see which song was number one, here you can see the top 5 songs of each year.

When I was born "Owner of a lonely heart" was no.1 :)

And my mother totally missed the cool music when she was young... her record collection is awful

I was raised on the oldies radio station when I was young, because really, that's all my parents actually listen to. They're not very diverse when it comes to music; they think anything not from their age is a bunch of crap. -_-

My uncle was the one who first got me into rock music. He introduced me to The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, etc. I would probably still be way out of the loop if it wasn't for him.

I so want to get into the beatles just to experience what everyone else was feeling at the time.
