Tash
February 3, 2014 - submitted by Kathleen, United States of America Q. Where did the idea of hidden tracks come from? I am also a huge fan of Depeche Mode and they have quite a few hidden tracks. However, Coldplay and Depeche Mode are the only bands I've come across that have them. I've just wondered where the idea came about/the reason why and if more bands utilize them or if they aren't very common. Thank you! The Oracle replies: The hidden track has been around for decades - on vinyl, cassette and CD. Not everyone has used them but there are literally hundreds. They say The Beatles were the first band to feature one on an album back in 1969. Whether accidental or deliberate it certainly started as something of a secret, exciting discovery but now they are far more common place. In recent times they appear after brief moments of silence but there are those that only start after longer periods of time (10 mins and upwards). Some have their own track - even though they are not listed on the sleeve - that you can skip to. Some are at the end of an existing song and you have to fast forward manually or let the song play out to discover it. There are some hidden tracks before an album starts which are harder to find (in the pre-gap).
Tash
February 3, 2014 - submitted by Pinar, Turkey Q. Hello dear Oracle, I have been wondering if the graffiti in the ETIAW video drawn by Paris is still available to be seen. If it is, where is it located? In London? I am planning to visit London next year around May and it would be remarkable if I could have a chance to see this art work. Love you all. Pinar The Oracle replies: I'm afraid the derelict site isn't safe for public visits and the graffiti is no longer there. It had to be removed at the time of filming. A team of helpers with emulsion and cleaning products got rid of it as each scene moved along into the next room.
Tash
February 4, 2014 - submitted by Plopie, Belgium Q. Do you know what's wrong with the Coldplaying forum? Can't ask anyone else because it says the forum is closed! The Oracle replies: I've no idea! Coldplaying is a very separate website and as it's an unofficial fansite of the band, I don't have any inside information.
Tash
February 4, 2014 - submitted by Laura, Argentina Q. Hi dear Oracle! What was the last gig you've attended? The Oracle replies: *STOP PRESS* Edit: A few hours after answering this and the last gig I attended is now Prince at Camden's Electric Ballroom in the early hours. Would you believe it was the Under 1 Roof charity gig before Christmas. This year I've been to the cinema 6 times and the theatre twice but haven't managed to see any live music yet. Got a couple coming up. The first I can't tell you about as it's a surprise (for somebody else, not me) and John Grant has a show coming up that I'm going to. Tash
February 4, 2014 - submitted by Anna, Denmark Q. Hey there! I saw the ETIAW question and wondered, if the building from the music video is the same as the one from by Arctic Monkeys? And if so, was the location chosen to make some kind of connection between the two? Anna The Oracle replies: Yes it's the same location but no there is absolutely no connection other than it's Millennium Mills and frequently used as a location for film, TV and music videos. One of which was my favourite Snow Patrol song's video, .

Tash
February 5, 2014 - submitted by Con, Australia Q. Hey Oracle, bit of a meta-question here... how did Oracle come to be? It doesn't seem like it's common practice for an artist to run a general question and answer page. That being said, love your work! Keep the wisdom flowing. The Oracle replies: The Q&A idea came well before my conception. The Oracle wing started July 2008 but the band have had a section for questions and answers since 2002. Back then it was totally band related questions I believe but obviously we've got a broader spectrum these days.
Tash
February 5, 2014 - submitted by Mitchell, Canada Q. As I'm sure you know, the cover of the X&Y album artwork, when translated, actually reads X9Y. Is there any explanation for this that I missed somewhere, was it done on purpose or was it an accident?... Thank you! The Oracle replies: There is no way that would be deliberate because X9Y means nothing. Nonsensical in fact. It doesn't say X9Y though, I'm pretty sure it does translate as X&Y. Tash
February 5, 2014 - submitted by George, United Kingdom Q. Hi Oracle! Did the band always have 'musicians' as their first career choice, or was it a hobby that ultimately became their job? Thanks! The Oracle replies: The interest in music was there for them all and they played in bands from an early age. Obviously they were at University studying and chose subjects for an alternative career but Chris once said that he went to UCL to meet Jonny, Guy & Will. Meaning that he had the idea he wanted to form a band at Uni but nobody could know that his destiny would indeed be fulfilled - nay, surpassed - there. Tash
February 6, 2014 - submitted by Steven, United States of America Q. Hello Oracle, I have a personal question that I hope you can answer. I came across a video of the bands live performance at the Big Day Out Festival in 2001 and before playing the song Sparks, Chris says this is for the couples and then says he has a girlfriend and points and says "you see Margaret there in the hat right? She's wicked and this song is for her." So what I want to know is if the song Sparks was written for her. Thanks! The Oracle replies: No. Sparks was written well before then. Tash
February 6, 2014 - submitted by Sara, United States of America Q. At the Philadelphia concert on 7/6/12, Chris said Will's drum kit was broken, and that they would skip a song. Which song did they skip? They played Trouble instead, which was an amazing treat! Thanks! The Oracle replies: Back on *6 July 2012 the band skipped Up In Flames so played Trouble instead. FYI UK folk: In the UK we refer to 7/6/12 as 6/7/12. Tash
February 9, 2014 - submitted by The Oracle, United Kingdom Q. WHO'D LIKE TO JOIN TEAM ORACLE? As you may know, we have a weekly feature, Team Oracle, whereby each Friday we open questions of a personal nature to all of you to answer too. Then, the following Friday, I post a selection of the best answers, alongside my own reply. ANYONE can join in so, if you'd like to, please email your response to the following question, in no more than 250 words, to [email protected] before midnight Thursday 13th February. Oracle I'm desperate! There's something I wanna do & it's kinda against my religion. I'm a believer but that thing I wanna do won't reduce my faith though. People in my city would judge me for doing it and that thing is connected to my religion. It would be better if I didn't say what is it because it needs a lot of explaining. Anyway I wanna you to help me. Something I used to do for my religion but I no more wanna do it but I can't make a choice. Shall I stop doing it and face the consequences or keep on doing it even though I'm a little bit not comfortable with it. It's like choosing between MY GOD and my own desires. I can't stop thinking. That's really annoying and it would be bad if I stopped doing it. Maybe I'll continue doing it but in the future but I just wanna stop doing it for now. I know it's gonna be difficult for you to help me cuz you don't know what that thing is but I believe that you're wise enough to tell me your opinion. Thanks for your time and I would really appreciate if you helped me. Thank you. Nesma, U.K. Look forward to seeing your replies. The Oracle. Tash
February 9, 2014 - submitted by Kassandra, Mexico Q. TEAM ORACLE QUESTION #155 Have you ever been heartbroken? Because lately I have been. It all started when I broke up with my boyfriend/best friend (biggest mistake ever) a year ago and got consumed by a big depression (6 months). His father sadly passed away in July, so I made a promise with myself that I would be strong for him and for me. Since then I feel a lot happier with myself. I love him, in the most-unbreakable-friendship way, but still, what should I do with my other feelings? Thanks. Kassandra. The Oracle replies: Yes I have been heartbroken and it's the worst pain I have ever experienced. The loss of love is like death but your ex-boyfriend is dealing with the death of his father, not the death of the relationship. You cannot fix him and therefore you may not be able to fix the relationship. I have spoken about death & bereavement a lot over the years. I have also the experience of being with someone who lost a parent. When their parent died, a little bit of them did too and ultimately our relationship started to break down. It's quite common and speaking to friends who have been through the same, they say that life is never the same again and felt the need to start afresh as the world they knew now didn't have that person in it. They cleared the decks and changed everything - job, accommodation, relationship. Something absolutely dreadful has happened but he's not a victim and you're not the hero. If anyone needs saving, it's probably you from the hurt you're feeling. Who is there for you? You don't 'have' to be strong. If you can be there as a friend to offer support & a shoulder to cry on that's commendable but if you're hoping this will lead to a reunion, you may have to step back. You may think it was a big mistake but presumably you broke up for a reason. You didn't reconcile so maybe it was actually for the best, even though you may not see or feel that. I hate to say this Kassandra but I don't think you are being strong for him and you. Where's the 'you' part? It sounds very much like you are putting his needs before your own. Depression is a hard condition to live with and I'm worried that you are using the saving him as masking tape for your problems. I'm hoping you are seeking help & guidance too. You need to deal with your feelings and to grieve your loss. Look after yourself. Over to you. If you really love him, your boyfriend, I think you should talk to him when he feels better. Tell him the truth: About your love, and about your other feelings. Don't quarrel, just talk. I'm afraid the talk won't be nice, but after your talk, you feel much better. It really helps to talk about your feelings. Now I have to say, that there is a chance it works out on a quarrel, and that quarrel will be worse then the talk, but in a month, maybe two, you'll also feel better. Another chance is that he'll break walk away from you. That means he hasn't got respect for your feelings, and he doesn't deserve your trust and love. If he walks away, you must let him go, and never let him in again. That will be very hard, but then there's no reason to feel guilty. Goodluck, Isabelle. I know exactly how you feel, if you are still in love with him then I should try to get him back. I don't know if he is still in love with you but you can find it out. Call him and ask him if he wanna go out with you because than you can find out how he feels about you. Only one thing, don't take him back if you feeling sorry for him because of his loss. Only if you got real feelings for him than go for it! I wanna wish you a lot of luck! Greets Marianne. I'm sorry to hear about your depression and I hope you're feeling better now. You mentioned you were the one who broke up with your boyfriend, there must've been a reason for that. If that reason or any other doubt still exists, I don't think you should act on your feelings for him. If anything goes wrong, you'll risk falling into another depression and you shouldn't put yourself through that again. But if you are sure about your feelings and if you still love him and he still loves you, then by all means go for it! Be careful and good luck. Amanda. I believe being heartbroken is something you should embrace.I'm not saying its a good experience to feel but it does help you to feel new feelings and experience things you never experience before. To make you feel better, i believe heartbroken musicians make the best lyricist. But to be honest, I guess it shall make you bolder though. Listen to mellow songs, look at the stars, look at the moon, life is so full of wonder. Sofia. I think the best thing to do would be to just be a friend to him for now.Sometimes that's all some people need at the moment. Support him and just get him through this tough time. Then you should be honest and tell him how you feel. Jenny. Love has no categories. Friendship and relationship are just words. Don't get stuck on that. There's no 'other feelings'. You still able to share the love with him. Live comfortably. You said you're happier now. It's amazing that you can share your love with every pieces of your broken hearted, isn't it? So why have to confused? Past is past. Time will answer your future with him. God bless you both. J. Thanks to all those who replied to this week's question. Tash
February 10, 2014 - submitted by George, United States of America Q. Hi Oracle, I found a funny bit of info, and I'd like to know what you think of it. I saw a video of a show back in 2011, where Kanye West, Jay Z, and Chris Martin were singing Homecoming. Near the end, Chris forgets some lyrics... was it because he hadn't done the song since 2007, or because he simply says, "I'm a little drunk". The Oracle replies: That show was from 31 December, 2010 - New Year's Eve. Chris had therefore had a drink but he wasn't drunk.
