Learning Bass Guitar

Featured Replies

Yep, I start next week. Sounded like a fun idea. One thing though, I need a bass and I have absolutely no idea what to buy. My brother (the musical genius of the family) knows nothing about them so he was no help.

So, can anyone help me? I honestly don't know a thing about them.

Hehehe i started playing a few weeks ago,it's tough..and lessons are pricey, cos you can't beat one on one.

Well all the name brands should serve you well..i.e BC Rich,Ibanez,ESP etc....i guess it depends on your budget....

The guy whos gonna teach me said a good one costs about $250 and the 'rents are happy to pay that.

As a beginner, I'd definitely suggest a Yamaha bass. They're always a sound way to go and usually you can pick up one for something not too expensive.

I hope the lessons go good! But remember to noodle around by yourself as much as you can/want as well.

Because Nothing beats teaching yourself.

Good luck with the lessons!

Thanks so much!! Okay, I'll remember that, a Yamaha.

Tis all cool. Didn't you used to play piano?

Or what other instrument do you play?

I still play the piano. I'm learning a few Muse songs now actually. I'm now studying Grade 6 (I think I posted a while back that I did my grade six exam...twas a typo, I actually only did grade 4 :P). And I also play viola and a little guitar.

Sweet. Muse is good.

Yer, I picked up bass for the first time about 8 years ago. In that time I had about 3 years of lessons. And I can honestly say that you'll learn so much more and get your own style by listening to music and teaching some stuff yourself.

However, in saying that. After doing those grades in piano, you may find lessons really good as you might understand things more on a theory base.

Yeah I've been learning piano now for nearly 8 years. There's a LOT of theory in piano and viola and I think a little less in things like guitar. I'm sorta looking to learn the basics and then go from there...not really sure. I'll see how the lessons go

I suspect stephan is an authority on that. the hierarchy of bass brands doesn't necessarily mirror that of standard guitars. Rickenbacker is one of the more popular ones and Fender precision and jazz basses also seem to be solid. If you're on a budget, I've heard squier basses are quite a bit better than squier guitars, but I'm not the one to ask...so why am I even responding?

Can't go wrong with a Fender or Ibanez starter pack

Includes bass, strap, amp, gig bag, wires, tuner, the works

;)

That is what I have...:smug:

There are a few good starters basses.

I had a Richwood JazzBass when I started for around 100 guldens(dutch money when I bought it) and it was very, very good.

You can buy Squier starter pack.. BUT don't do it.

They realy suck.. never buy Standard Squiers, they are worse then Standard Fenders.

If you wan't a quality Squier, better then standard Fenders. Go for the Squier Vintage series!

They costs round 200 euros and sounds sooo good.

Other good brands: Cort, Yamaha, Ibanez, OLP..

The best thing to do is testing.

Go to the musicstore and test some basses.. take the best you can take.

Also the amp can be cheap and good.

I suggest Hartke combos or Ampeg or Marshall.

I started with Harkte and using now Marshall.. but my old Harkte combo did costs less then my bass..

Another tip: Start with a Jazz bass. You can learn everything on it.. Slapping sounds the best on a jazz, even the Richwood I had!

And another tip.. Learn as much theory as possible.. There is a free online bassbook.. And its the best I know!

Another good tutorial website: Youtube!

Have fun!

And if you have any questions.. post them here! ;)
