Jenjie
Freewheelin' Bands On the Road, a collection of drawings by some well-known bandfolk such as Pele Almqvist of the Hives and Guy Berryman of Coldplay, comes out this Friday the 24th. Other featured bands include Aqualung, Babyshambles and the Libertines, Belle and Sebastian, Coldplay, The Dandy Warhols, Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, The Hives, Hoobastank, Howie Day, Interpol, Keane, The Killers, Maroon 5, Nada Surf, Oasis, The Raconteurs, The Shins, Snow Patrol, Travis, and more...capturing their experiences on the road through their sketches. Another contributor, Pete Doherty (whose handwriting is much neater than expected), offers a glimpse into his mental workings and the thoughts behind his drawing, above (click on pic). It is one wild toad ride: ''All kinds of weird things were going on there... strange little kids with big heads would kill animals and butchers chased them. And we made a little film, it was a bit dark actually, and in the film I had to pretend that I raped a girl, who as an actress. Yeah, it was strange, but I fell in love with her anyway.... There were no boundaries, anything was possible and could have happened and did happen. Yeah, it’s just a very romantic time in my head, but dangerous too — just cool!'' Guy Berryman gets lost in the Pompidou Center, James Valentine draws an LA "Everyman" (and worries about possibly becoming one in future), Pete Doherty leads a tour through a Moscow that very few of us will ever visit....From the original London Bridge in the middle of Arizona to the Pixies' backstage ban on beer, life on tour always offers surprises. Indie music lives, and exactly how it lives is engagingly shown in this collection of drawings by members of the most successful bands in America, Britain, and Germany. Places they've been, private moments, concerts and tours, hopes and dreams: the book brings together the intimate thoughts and experiences of a wide range of musicians and presents a kaleidoscope of the lively independent music scene. The contributing musicians were asked to think about something in the past that had an important impact on them, a person or event that still resonates, and to draw it. The resulting sketches and their connected stories reveal a personal dimension to their lives that no interview ever could. Featured bands include Aqualung, Babyshambles & the Libertines, Belle and Sebastian, Coldplay, The Dandy Warhols, Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, The Hives, Hoobastank, Howie Day, Interpol, Keane, The Killers, Maroon 5, Nada Surf, Oasis, The Raconteurs, The Shins, Snow Patrol, Travis, and more. 106 color illustrations. Jenjie
Guy Berryman of Coldplay ''The Pompidou Centre, Paris'' Berryman's sketch is inspired by the time he got locked up on the roof of Paris’ Pompidou Centre as an eight-year-old boy. ''I can just remember the door closing and me being stuck out there. I think somebody had followed me, came up to the roof and brought me down. I can’t remember that much about it or what my mother said. I just remember being terrified and feeling very alone, thinking I was going to die up there on the roof.'' http://www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20057685_20057686_20226799_1,00.html
