Their eyes were watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

Oyy the dialect in that book killed me!

I honestly don't know much about American literature, because most of the literary classics I have read are not American. But I quite liked The Great Gatsby and a bunch of others that people have mentioned though!

does it have to be really "literary"? because orson scott card is an absolutely AMAZING american scifi writer who uses ideas like the ones in 1984.

Ender's Game was AMAZING!! And we had to read that for school, so I think you could do a lot of stuff with it in terms of literary-ness. But it might be too long.

(1984 was fantastic too. George Orwell rocks. I reccommend some of his essays too, Politics and the English Language...etc)

ender's game and both of the series that come off that book are some of my favorite books in the world.

i have to say that most of the stuff i read comes from british authors, but fahrenheit 451 is a good suggestion. catch-22 is funny, but sometimes its really confusing because there's really no point to it. i got lost trying to look for the point.

I think someone's mentioned The Great Gatsby already, but that is a fantastic book. Also, A Separate Peace is very good.

haha, thanks justin. it's one of my all-time favorites, but i don't know how much you're going to fall in love with it. that said, i don't think you'll hate it either.

Urgh, I hated Animal Farm, though I know I'm in the minority.

1984 blew my mind!!!
