"Rifles for Watie", "The Giver" and "Where the Red Fern Grows" are my recommendations.

:) The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.

It changed my life.

Ooohh. The Giver is a GREAT book as well.

I really enjoy Jeffery Deaver novels. They're mystery novels with really creative criminals and stuff, I love them.

Same here! You should DEFINITELY read this.

I Had to write an 20 page essay on Of Mice And Men!, It is a BRILLIANT Book! :D...poor lennie :(

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer.

Two incredible books.

I hated Of Mice And Men!

Would agree about The Catcher & The Rye and would also recommend "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee - that's my all-time favourite

To kill a mockingbird is a classic.

One flew over the cuckoos nest is one of my fave books.*im pos its by an american author*

*What kind of books do you like reading... like.. what genre?

"Dreams from My Father" by Barack Obama

Not even a politically-based book, and he is an absolutely amazing writer

You could always just read something you've read before, right...? :P

i've read to kill a mockingbird and cathcer in the rye. and farewell to arms but i would never read that agian.

i wnated to read 1984 but it had to be an american author so i couldn't. anyone no of anythign similar ot orwell by an american authoer?

does it have to be really "literary"? because orson scott card is an absolutely AMAZING american scifi writer who uses ideas like the ones in 1984.

the great gastby is AMAZING, as is a tree grows in brooklyn. douglas adams is a great writer too, but those books are more funny and entertaining rather than something you'd really read for school, i think.

but like nick said: dreams from my father by barack obama! it's not political; it's a memoir.

Exaclty, and it'[s amazingly written and opens up your eyes.

But if you're looking for fiction, I'd highly recommend "The Loop" by Nicholas Evans. It's just a fantastic story (so far) and I can already see it shaping up to be the best book I've read by any American author.
