RedGirl76
I hated Of Mice And Men! Would agree about The Catcher & The Rye and would also recommend "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee - that's my all-time favourite

ApproximatelyInfinite
i've read to kill a mockingbird and cathcer in the rye. and farewell to arms but i would never read that agian. i wnated to read 1984 but it had to be an american author so i couldn't. anyone no of anythign similar ot orwell by an american authoer? does it have to be really "literary"? because orson scott card is an absolutely AMAZING american scifi writer who uses ideas like the ones in 1984. the great gastby is AMAZING, as is a tree grows in brooklyn. douglas adams is a great writer too, but those books are more funny and entertaining rather than something you'd really read for school, i think. but like nick said: dreams from my father by barack obama! it's not political; it's a memoir. Exaclty, and it'[s amazingly written and opens up your eyes. But if you're looking for fiction, I'd highly recommend "The Loop" by Nicholas Evans. It's just a fantastic story (so far) and I can already see it shaping up to be the best book I've read by any American author.
