I'm looking for new bands to discover and I'm having a huge amount of trouble. I'm a soft rock and rock n' roll fan, but today there are so many horrible bands out there today that I can't differentiate with the good and the crappy. It would be greatly appreciated if you could help. I love stuff like:

Coldplay (obviously )

U2

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Kooks

The Who

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Eagles

Sam Roberts

Snow Patrol etc.

I despise anything punk, emo, heavy metal and goth. They're just depressing "genres" of rock that doesn't make you feel happy at all. You know what I mean, right?

Thanks for your help. :)

Some other one's you might like:

Muse

Pink Floyd

--------------

But just so I don't cloud your head with a million things...

Definitely check out Radiohead, they're basically the 2nd most popular band among Coldplayers. Don't be turned off by songs like "creep" I almost promise you'll enjoy the albums "the bends" and/or "OK Computer"

Now... you emphasize happy. So if Radiohead isn't your cup of tea... (not that they're emo, far from it, just less happy-go-lucky.)

The Killers(hot fuzz or sam's town), Oasis(What's the story [Morning Glory]) and The Verve (Urban Hymns) are safe bets any day of the week. Great Stuff.

If you don't mind beautiful music in other languages... check out Sigur Ros. Really ethereal Stuff, but I promise you you'll love their latest album "Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust" As it's full of warm, accessible and beautiful music.

I agree about Pink Floyd : mainly the 7O's era.
