Any Advice? (universities)

First off, this is a rather personal thread, but still I wanted to hear your opinions.

I spent the last 4 months of my degree abroad, in Aberdeen and it has been by far the best thing I've ever done in my life. Back in Barcelona, I had always lived at my parents' place and my experience at my University had been poor. It was just me attending some lectures, coming back home and studying, and that was all about the fantastic University experience that we students are supposed to have. The treatment with both teachers and even my classmates was unimpersonal and cold, it felt like no-one cared about you. But then, in Abdn, they all were approachable and even if living in the halls of residence, I felt as if I had been there since ages and I had the time of my life.

After having gone through this, I'd like to repeat it again even when knowing that 2nd times are not always the same. Been thinking of going back to Aberdeen, but it could be a mistake. I'd like to apply for several UK Universities but to be honest I don't know much about them. Have you got any suggestion? The ones I thought of are Sussex, York, Heriot-Watt, Kent and East Anglia so far.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but what is your reason for wanting to go to university again? To enhance your CV or for the experience? I'm just curious :)

I really don't think that a music forum is the best place to ask stuff like this....

Why not? This is the Lounge, anyway. There's a thread about boobs for goodness sake lol.

Iris, are you planning to do a masters or just doing part of your degree in another uni here in the uk?

I can't really help you there with those Uni's, but I know exactly your feeling of going from a dull uni life, to an amazing one in the UK. Hope you come back here soon!!! :nice:

PS: as it has already been pointed out, this is the Lounge part of the forum, for random things (boobs and fashion and things like that). And considering a large part of the members are from/in the uk, and have a similar age range, seems like a fairly good idea to get some 'unbiased' opinions around here...

The University of Kent at Canterbury is a rather quiet campus I think. Probably very good for study but quite quiet socially. Lovely setting though.

York is beautiful, and it's not too far from other places you might like to visit. It has a unique atmosphere, and I really think you'd feel like you were at university, with all the old buildings and history about, if that makes sense. It's a pretty quiet place again, but as I wrote not too far for travel to a livelier nightlife spot like Sheffield or Leeds if you like to party.

Sussex is Brighton? In my opinion this place has it all in terms of nightlife and culture, and also a fairly decent university. I've long been thinking of moving down there myself.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on!!

Hehe, this made me laugh. 'Things like that' lol.

@Sal, do you mean you're asked for a 1st or upper 2nd class honours??

@Tonsu,

Actually I'm rather looking for a socially active place, with a lively nightlife scene. Of course the perfect place would be one that had it all and that wasn't too expensive since I'll have to afford all the expenses myself. I've liked pretty much the York University and they offer a wide range of courses, so I'll probably apply for that one.

Yeah, Sussex is in Brighton! The only problem with that Uni is that its tuition fees are a bit higher compared to the other Universities I've been checking but still, it's an option to consider.

Will let you know how it goes, it's a quite risky project!

@Mari,

for some reason I knew that you'd understand me, especially now that you're in Oxford! I'm thinking of taking a master's degree, which takes one year. It may take some more time because I may take a part-time one, so I could work part-time as well because my parents are not going to support me whatsoever in this 'project' of mine.

@Fixed,

Sure I don't mind!

The main reason why I'd like to keep on going to University is basically for the experience (and at the same time I'd enhance my CV, which is really good). I'm done with my degree so theoretically if I wanted to I could work for good and forget about the studies but I don't feel it's the right moment to do so and I'm afraid that if I started working for a kinda long period, let's say 1year, I don't think I could go back and start studying again.

Thanks for the info! :nice: The rankings, I mean.

I'm not sure. Check it with them. I imagine it also depends on where you did your Bachelor Degree (the Spanish university)

Loughbrough has a very good uni !!

Oh really?

Didn't know that. Will check that one then! :)

Academically? I thought it was very sports-centred. Also it's very rural, isn't it?

How about Leeds? I went there. Cracking nightlife, pretty good academic reputation, not too expensive to live round there. And most importantly rather good fish and chips :D

Hey Iris! I hope you're well.

Sussex would be great I think. My friend goes there, so I've been around the campus and everything, its nice......set into a very countryside-y part of Brighton but only 20mins or so away from the town centre.

and of course, I'm from Brighton, so I can vouch for it being a great place to go to uni. For one, it's less than an hour's train ride to London, so you can enjoy all of that.

Brighton has so many shops, things to do, varied nightlife and the beach/sea :)

I really think you should visit the places before applying to the universities. I know it's a bit difficult because you live in Spain but it's worth it.

I think my choices would be different if I had to go through the whole application process again. I like the location of my university but I'm not very happy with my course.

I agree Sal, but I'll be very careful with my choices since it would be completely pointless to spend all this money (and time) taking a course that I don't even like. That may spoil the whole experience. Of course there is always the risk of thinking I may like the course but I don't eventually... but it's a risk I've got to assume!

Hey Kara! :)

Yeah, everybody's been telling me that Brighton is such a good place to be and I really liked that University (at least the information of it I've been finding out these days). As always my problems are my marks - which are not that great - and economical too, but I'll find a way to overcome the latter drawback anyway.

I checked Leeds but unfortunately I'm not a holder of what they call a good honours degree and that's one of the main reasons why I'm finding it more difficult to find a university in which I fulfill all of the requirements.

I would have thought York is much harder to get in?:\

I was like that. Thought I was gonna like it but I then realised that other universities offer courses I'd be more interested in. I really should have applied to the University of Manchester. Tried to transfer last year and they said I might be able to after they saw my grades. They unfortunately told me after that they were no places on the course I wanted to do.
