It's funny how most of these aren't even rock bands.

OK, so there's Rock, Hard Rock, Alternative Rock, Metal... but these I have seen all except Jimi Hendrix (sorry he died so young) and think these are the top rock bands... there's more than 10

Rock music is a huge genre with many different categories. The person asked what was your top 10 rock bands and not any specific genre therefore any band, whether they are pop/soft rock to heavy metal, can be included in the list because they all fall into the "rock" category.

 

Also, what one might consider to be rock, others may not.

They fall into it. Music categories can be compare to a pyramind. At the top of the pyramid is the overall category (rock) and the as you move on the down the pyramind the sub-categories form. Music executives will say that, yeah, metal music and all it's crazy subcategories falls within the rock category.

 

One may not think of some artists as falling within the rock category but according to music industry guidelines those musicians fit within the guidelines. Ex: Genesis. Some may say they are not rock but they do fall within the guidelines. Another example: The Beatles. A lot of people don't consider them rock at all but pop. Well, pop falls under the rock guidelines.

 

The point is if someone wants to know the favorites of rock then they need to be specific because of the category's broadness.

Metal is a completely different category,and does not fall into the Rock category at all.

i agree with RICK8 to a certain extent that rock is very very different to metal.

 

rock is simple vocals, lightly distorted guitar or even acoustic, finger picked bass usually with no distortion or very little, regular paced drums and sometimes keys. lyrics are usually based around romance, life or politics.

 

metal on the other hand has harsh often screamed vocals, heavily distorted guitar played very fast, heavily distorted bass that often sounds like a lead guitar (watch some cliff burton solos) and rapid drumming with alot of double kicks. lyrics are often on the topic of death, anger and hatred but obviously not limited to that.

 

but personally i think a large proportion of Metallica's music is hard rock not metal. largely due to the fact that the vocals are plain and there isn't always shredding.

I only argued the fact because I'm a metalhead,and it's likely tracylynn doesn't even know any metal bands to make the comparison.

Well, that's nice to say. :rolleyes: Thanks, I guess I don't music at all. I mean, what the hell do I know?

 

My point being is that in music, it does not matter what the guitars sound like, how the vocals are, and so forth, because all kinds of music falls under one big category and then broken down into sub-categories. Rock music has many different branches and they are all different. Metal may not fall in the rock category in your eyes, but if you look at the musical tree, metal is a branch of that big enormous rock tree. Rock music can not be easily defined and that is why there are sooooo many branches.
