Help needed - Prepaid Surfing with UMTS stick in the UK??!

Featured Replies

... or any other way I can surf the net while being 'on the go'.

I am going to the UK in September to see several Coldplay concerts, at least I will be spending a week over there and I definitly don't want to miss out on the internet so I am about to take my notebook/laptop with me.

Also I want to upload pics (if they turn out) so I need to be able to log on :)

Anyway, I am really blonde when it comes to technical stuff and I haven't used UMTS sticks or any prepaid stuff over here yet.

So if you try to help me, please consider that I am not really technical educated ;)

So what about these 'Hot Spots' (Starbucks aso.)?

Are you really able to surf from there for free? Do you need any additional hardware? (I have got a WLAN included in my laptop already, in case it's of any importance!?)

Are threre any other ways or tips? :\

I could probably buy an UMTS stick here as well, but when I surf in the UK, they would charge the international rate and I reckon that would be quite expensive.

So any guidance is really appreciated :)

Thanks :smug:

If I were you, I'd use free hotspots. As far as I know in every major city in the UK you can find loads of those free services in restaurants, hotels, cafés or public places. All you need is a laptop capable of wLan, no UMTS-stick or similar is necessary.

If i recall correctly, the McDonald's restaurants in London and Edinburgh were providing free hotspots for surfing, but I think there are a lot more opportunities. Just google for "Free Hotspots", and you'll find some for each city you're gonna visit.

Get a wi-fi enabled laptop and there be free hotspots around, in London should be quite a few, and even your hotel room might provide wi-fi (sometimes 'free' sometimes for a small fee) :)

Okay ... :)

Thanks you two. I wasn't really sure, if it was really free but I guess I can be quite relaxed now.

And hopefully pics & reports will come shortly after concert is finished :)
