TAYLOR Swift is the darling of Victoria's online music fans.

The US country pop star is the most popular artist on MySpace, according to a chart of online music tastes based on four million website hits in the past year.

The results reveal Victoria is in tune with music trends via Swift, Basshunter, Behind Crimson Eyes and Michael Jackson while New South Wales is soft and poppy with the Jonas Brothers, Australian Idol reject Tom Williams, Lady GaGa and Beyonce all polling inside the top 10.

Lily Allen and Short Stack featured heavily across all states.

"It reveals a nation with eclectic music tastes," Darain Faraz, of MySpace, said.

He said MySpace was an accurate barometer of Australian music tastes and called on radio programmers to take note.

"Particularly because there are so many unsigned and independent artists that may not be featured on radio, or be in the top 40," he said.

Mr Faraz cited significant differences between the MySpace chart, ARIA top 40 and commercial radio playlists.

For all those Melbourners, it was in the Sunday Herald Sun today, page 15. You could probably rush down to a service station or get a backcopy tomorrow at a newsagent.

I wouldn't actually take this as what Victorians' music tastes are ACTUALLY like, though. Of course a MySpace representative would say MySpace was an accurate measure of tastes ... still, good to see the boys up there, and I spy Muse as well. The Presets too :wacky:

For those of you wondering who Short Stack is, band that have only released one album that have gotten insane hype. As for Behind Crimson Eyes, no bloody idea.

Interesting, thanks :D

I think the bigger a band/artist gets the less useful myspace is as a promotional tool. Once these artists start shifting records the more reticent record companies become to share music with the fans. I think Coldplay only have a handful of songs to stream on their page. Plus the artists themselves have less time/inclination to use the blog or post pictures.

Myspace is fantastic for new artists though. Lily Allen basically launched her career there.

As did Short Stack, so it seems. Well, they did do a bit of touring for other artists, I s'pose.

Oh, and I got the paper. Why'd you cut the top off it?

I couldn't fit all of it into my scanner without doing a wonky cut and paste job to plonk the top back on it. My scanner/printer fails in this way.

Also, I have not heard anything worthwhile from Bliss N Eso, just a track from Ministry of Sound Annual 09, so no idea why they're up high.

On the subject of sydney-bashing, I may dislike your taste in music but I love your city. Went there for the first time, just recently.

Why thank you.

I visited Melbourne about 4 years ago, and loved it. Suits my personality more. But I'm very much an Eastern Suburbs girl so I don't think I could leave. :)

Woo Sydney.

I knew those dudes from Short Stack... just some friends of friends. Never knew they'd get so far with that band - it's crazy. They're pretty cool kids; haven't seen them for ages though.

ANYWAY:

Uh. Yay Myspace? >.>
