2 PEOPLE KILLED BY AVALANCHE NEAR CORTINA d'AMPEZZO IN ITALY

 

An avalanche near the Italian wintersport resort Cortina d'Ampezzo has caused the death of 2 people. The accident occurred in about 2,100 m in the Cristallo massive - so the Italian news agency Ansa.

 

Both victims were Italians from South Tirol.

 

There has been great risk of avalanches for days. Alert 3 on the 5-digit scale

was in force.

 

On Tuesday a snowboarder from Bayern / Bavaria had been trapped by an avalanche in Belluno.

MASSIVE FLOODINGS IN AUSTRALIA

 

Torrential rain has caused massive floodings in QUEENSLAND in north-eastern Australia.

 

Early Friday the rescue service was in action to rescue people from the water masses on 20 different occasions.

 

A teenager-boy was swept away by a wave, but managed to hold on to a tree until he could be rescued.

 

The man who saved him was swept away himself when taking the boy into safety. The man could however get into safety from the water masses further down the river.

MOZAMBIQUE: MORE THAN 35 DEAD DUE TO FLOODINGS

At least 36 people have died due to massive floodings in Mozambique according to info given by the United Nations.

 

26 deaths have been recorded in Gaza - Mozambique's worst-hit province.

 

Almost 68,000 people were forced to leave their houses because of non-stop rainfalls.

 

A total of about 85,000 people are affected, BUT the number of affected could also be 100,000 in Gaza alone.

 

More rainfalls are feared.

A state of EMERGENCY has been declared in QUEENSLAND.

 

Disastrous floodings have forced more than 1,000 Australians to leave their homes.

 

Vast areas on the Australian east coast are under water after days with stormy weather and rain.

 

The government leader in the Australian state of QUEENSLAND has asked the army to help the state because local rescue teams alone could no longer cope with the disastrous situation.

 

The floods had trapped many people in their cars or houses.

 

The people in East Australia have experienced storms and cloudbursts for more than one week now.

2 LANDSLIDES IN INDONESIA KILLED AT LEAST 11. 19 ARE MISSING.

 

Up to 30 have been killed after 2 landslides in Indonesia. At least 11 have been killed. 19 are missing.

 

One of the landslides occurred in the Agam district on West Sumatra.

 

The other landslide occurred in the Kerinci district.

 

It has been raining quite a lot in the region for a longer period.

 

Earlier in January 32 people were killed in a flooding in the capital, Jakarta, whereas 40,000 homes were flooded.

AT LEAST 3 DEAD IN CONNECTION WITH FLOODINGS IN QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

 

Thousands of communities have been flooded after intensive skyfall during the past few days in East Australia.

 

About 1,200 houses in the town Bundaberg in the state of Queensland were under water.

 

Many people in Bundaberg almost 400 km north of Brisbane fled up on the roofs. Almost 20 people were rescued from rooftops by helicopter.

 

At least 3 people died in the past few days according to the authorities in Brisbane, capital in the state of Queensland.

 

The heavy rain followed the tropical storm OSWALD with stormwind gust all over the coast region.

 

A state of emergency has been declared some days ago in all of Queensland. The authorities have proclaimed "acute state of emergency" in Bundaberg because the water level is rising very fast and has now reached a record-high level - so news agency AFP. It is feared that several buildings will be washed away. Police has ordered mandatory evacuation.

 

Queensland is one of the continent's most popular tourist resorts with its kilometer-long sand beaches.

11 DEATHS AFTER LANDSLIDE IN INDONESIA

 

Specialists and rescue teams have found 11 dead bodies following a landslide in Indonesia.

 

Maninjau in Westsumatrra was hit and buried by an avalanche of mud - 9 people remain missing.

 

Heavy rainfalls had made tons of earth/dirt slide down a slope. 12 houses were buried under the avalanche.

TURKEY: 7 DEAD FOLLOWING LANDSLIDE DURING FOOTBALL MATCH - 3 PEOPLE INJURED

 

This occurred in the town of Sirnak in south-eastern Turkey. Both players and people watching the football game were surprised by the soft dirt / earth.

FLOODING FORCING 150,000 TO FLEE THE GAZA PROVINCE IN MOZAMBIQUE

 

Intense flooding in Mozambique has forced at least 150,000 people to leave the GAZA province - so United Nations'S spokeswoman Patricia Nakell reported today, Monday 28.1.13.

 

According to the UN, the number of fleeing people might rise as more rain and even higher water levels are expected.

 

The flooding has hit the low-lying southern province last week forcing the inhabitants to flee the area and seek to higher ground.

 

At least 40 people have died so far.

 

The authorities do not know how many people might be trapped in more isolated / remote areas that are difficult to reach for rescue teams.

 

Also SOUTH AFRICA, ZIMBABWE and BOTSWANA are affected by the floods.

The flood disaster in Australia spreads quickly towards the SOUTH.

 

People and rescue services were fighting (against) the water masses on a 700-km-long coast stretch.

 

Due to a storm with hurricane-like wind gusts and heavy rainfalls Brisbane (with millions of inhabitants) and the state of NEW SOUTH WALES are on HIGH ALERT.

 

4 people have so far died including a little boy who was killed by a huge falling tree.

 

Thousands of people are now in emergency camps.

 

Military is helping the rescue teams in the states of Queensland and New South Wales where vast areas are under water after heavy skyfalls / cloudbursts.

 

More than ten thousand have been forced to leave their homes or are trapped by the water masses.

POWERFUL STORMS IN SOUTH-EASTERN USA - 1 MAN DIED IN TENNESSEE / 1 MAN DIED IN GEORGIA

 

Powerful storms ravaged the south-eastern USA on Wednesday, 31 January 2013 leaving a trail of destruction.

 

The community of Adairsville in the US state of Georgia was ravaged by a tornado: Vehicles were overturned, and a bank lost its roof and some residential houses were levelled. One man was killed, and at least 9 people were injured according to rescue teams.

 

1 man was killed by an uprooted tree in Tennessee. There the authorities located at least half a dozen tornadoes with windgusts of up to 185 km per hour.

MAGNITUDE 6.9 EARTHQUAKE SHAKING THE JAPANESE ISLAND OF HOKKAIDO

 

Today - Saturday, 2.2.13 in the afternoon - a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook the Japanese island of Hokkaido - so several news agencies report.

 

It is not yet known whether the quake caused any deaths or any material damage.

 

The epicentre of the quake is reported to be at a depth of 103 km / 10 miles - about 15 km west of the town/city of Obihiro.

 

No tsunami alert was issued after the quake.

 

EDIT: Some tens of people (60 / 70?) have been slightly injured, and the authorities issued warnings of landslides.

 

The nuclear power plants on the island of Hokkaido where the quake could be felt the most were apparently without any damage.

 

Only 2 of Japan's around 50 reactors are operative after the quake on 11 March 2011 that claimed 22,000 human lives and caused severe / serious / grave damage to the nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

CYCLONE FELLENG KILLS 6 PEOPLE IN MADAGASCAR

 

Saturday, 2 February, 2013 the tropical cyclone Felleng hit the northern part of Madagascar. 6 people are confirmed dead, and 3 people are reported missing.

 

The cyclone has also caused extensive material damage on the island in the Indian Ocean east of southern Africa - so the country's ministry for the civil preparedness reported Saturday evening.

 

Felleng hit the capital Antananarivo where there is massive damage with destroyed buildings, overturned trees and disconnection of the power supply - particularly due to massive floodings.

MAGNITUDE 8.0 EARTHQUAKE IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC / TSUNAMI-ALERT ISSUED / 1 M HIGH TSUNAMI REACHED SOLOMON ISLANDS / ALERT NOW RAISED AGAIN

 

In the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, the South Pacific experienced a magnitude 8.0 earthquake near the island of Santa Cruz - one of the Solomon Islands. A tsunami wave - about 1m high - reached the coast at the town of Lata on Santa Cruz. At least 3 towns are feared destroyed.

 

5 people - including a child - died, and 5 were injured. Around 50 houses / huts on the coast were destroyed by the tsunami wave.

 

The warning of a possible tsunami in the South Pacific was raised after several hours - so The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported to the news agency Reuters. Before the warning was raised, threatened coastal areas had already been evacuated.

 

The quake occurred at a depth of 5.8 km and had its epicentre at the Santa Cruz island about 340 km east of Kira Kira at the island of Makira.

 

A magnitude 5.6 aftershock has occurred.

 

A spokesman for the Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo reports that 4 villages on the Santa Cruz islands that are part of the Solomon islands have been seriously affected.

 

Around 500,000 people are living on the 200 islands called the Solomon Islands.

AT LEAST 34 DEATHS AFTER SKYFALL / CLOUDBURST IN PAKISTAN

 

Torrential rain has cost at least 34 human lives in Pakistan - mainly in north-west Pakistan close to the Afghanistan border.

 

Worst is the situation in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region with 25 deaths and 57 injured people in the skyfall since Sunday - so the local auathorities report.

 

Pakistan has been hit by devastating monsoon rain and floodings for the past 3 years.

 

21 million people were affected and close to 1,800 died in floodings in 2010.

DEATH TOLL FOLLOWING MAGNITUDE 8 EARTHQUAKE AND ENSUING TSUNAMI RISEN TO 9

 

The number of deaths after the earthquake and ensuing tsunami on Wednesday in the South Pacific has risen to 9.

 

Several people are missing on the particularly affected Salomon island of Santa Cruz - this according to New Zealand's television.

 

The Solomon islands were hit by a tsunami with almost 1m high waves after a magnitude 8 earthquake.

 

At least 700 buildings were destroyed or damaged according to reports.

 

Rescue teams are trying to reach villages that were hit by the quake and the ensuing tsunami on Santa Cruz.

 

Some villages along the coast were under water.

 

Several houses have been moved several meters, and 95% of the houses in the village of Nela have been destroyed.

 

The airfield on the island has been closed due to sand, trees and debris.

 

More than 40 aftershocks shook the Solomon islands.

AT LEAST 7 DEAD IN CONNECTION WITH THE SNOW STORM CALLED NEMO IN THE USA

 

At least 7 people died in the snow storm that affected the north-eastern USA this week-end.

 

According to NBC News the death toll is 9, and the German Press Agency mentions 10 deaths.

 

The bad weather started late Saturday. Up to 700,000 households and companies in 9 US states were affected by power cuts.

 

Many cities in both NEW ENGLAND and NEW YORK were affected by up to 1 m of snow.

 

About 5,300 flights were cancelled. The air traffic in New York has been resumed. And train traffic between New York and capital Washington D.C. has been resumed as well according to Amtrak, the operator of the railways.

 

The bad weather continued northward and affected 3 Canadian provinces.

30 DEAD IN FLOODING IN MOZAMBIQUE

 

The northern Mozambique has been affected by a massive flooding. At least 30 people have lost their lives in the past few days.

 

Most deaths happened in the Nampula province as a consequence of drowning, acute diarrhoea and lightning.

 

Almost 2,000 homes in the area were destroyed by the flood, and many have been forced to leave their homes.

 

In the southern parts of Mozambique at least 105 people have died since the start of the rainy season in October 2012. 150,000 have lost their homes.

AT LEAST 13 DEATHS IN CONNECTION WITH BAD WEATHER IN INDONESIA

 

At least 13 people have died in connection with massive floods and landslides after heavy rainfalls in INDONESIA.

 

10 people have died Sunday morning in the town of Manado in the North-Sulawesi province according to a spokesman for the authority in charge of

management of disasters.

 

1,200 people have been evacuated.

 

Saturday 3 people including 2 14-year-olds were killed, as they were washed away by water masses in the JAMBI province in SUMATRA.

 

During the rainy season INDONESIA experiences floods and landslides.

MAGNITUDE 4.8 (or 4.9) EARTHQUAKE SHOOK CENTRAL ITALY

 

Saturday evening, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook central Italy.

 

According to the authorities the earthquake occurred 9 miles south-east of Rome in the Abruzzes where in April 2009 the city/town of l'Aquila was hit by a devastating earthquake that killed many people.

 

The quake could be felt from Rome to Napoli / Neaples.

 

According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics the epicentre was in Frosinone between Rome and Neaples (Napoli) or close to the towns of Sora and Isola des Liri.

 

No reports of casualties (deaths or injuries).

 

The tremors caused panic. Some people chose to stay in public safe centers.

 

Sunday, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded in the Mediterraneans south of Hellas / Greece.

KANSAS was affected Thursday morning with up to 5 cm of snow per hour according to the broadcaster NBC.

2 DEATHS IN CONNECTION WITH BAD WEATHER IN NEW SOUTH WALES, EAST AUSTRALIA

 

 

2 people have died in connection with bad weather in EAST AUSTRALIA.

 

Thousands of inhabitants had to be evacuated from low-lying coastal areas in the Australian state of NEW SOUTH WALES.

 

A man drowned in his car after the car had been torn away by the water masses - so according to media reports.

 

The second victim was a 17-year-old man who fell into a sewage pipe as he collected golf balls on a flooded golf course near Port Macquarie.

 

100 train passengers were stuck close to Coffs Harbour for 17 hours after a toppled tree had fallen unto the railway tracks.

 

The water level of several rivers in the region had risen considerably due to heavy rain.

 

The population was urged to avoid areas with high water levels.

 

Several areas cut off by flooding. The SYDNEY area worst hit.

DEADLY SKIING ACCIDENTS IN WESTERN CANADA

 

Several skiers have lost their lives in the British Columbia province in western Canada.

 

3 people were buried by an avalanche at Revelstoke Mountain - Friday. One skiier died due to an avalanche in an offpiste area.

 

A total of 3 people were buried in the snow masses. 2 were recovered unharmed.

 

A 19-year-old Dane collided with a cliff at the Phalanx Mountain near Whistler - the accident occurred last Wednesday, and he died Friday (22.2.13).

MAGNITUDE 6.2 EARTHQUAKE SHAKES ISLAND OF HONSHU / EAST JAPAN - BUILDINGS WERE SWAYING IN TOKYO FOR 30 SECONDS

 

A powerful earthquake has shaken the Japanese main island of HONSHU.

According to Japanese television reports the magnitude was 6.2.

 

The earthquake caused buildings in the capital TOKYO to sway for 30 seconds. There are no reports of injuries or any major damage, and no tsunami alert was issued.

 

According to Tepco, the operator of nuclear power plants, inclusive of the damaged nuclear power plant in Fukushima, there were no problems with the nuclear plants in the neighbourhood of the epicentre that was 10 km below the surface of the earth in the Tochigi province / prefecture about 12 miles north of Tokyo.

 

2 years ago, on 11 March 2011, a gigantic earthquake and ensuing tsunami led to one of the worst reactor disasters in the history of using nuclear power. Almost 19,000 people were killed.

FLOODINGS HAUNTING MACEDONIA / AT LEAST 2 HAVE DIED

 

One person has drowned and several houses are destroyed after massive floodings in macedonia.

 

Following 2 days of heavy rain vast areas agricultural land are under water, and the small country in the Balkans is experiencing power outages - so according to the local authorities.

 

According to Macedonia's Centre for Crisis Management more than 10 rivers have overflown their banks, and at least 2 bridges have been destroyed by the water masses.

 

A 51-year-old man from the town of Cvetisnica situated in the northeastern part of the country drowned as he attempted to cross the river.

AT LEAST 8 DEAD IN FLOODING IN ECUADOR

 

At least 8 people have died after flooding following torrential rain in south-western Ecuador this week-end. So the governor of the worst-hit province Guayas reports.

 

6 died of electrocution caused by the enormous masses of water, whereas one person drowned.

 

The 8th victim was a child that disappeared in the water masses.

700 HOUSES DESTROYED IN EARTHQUAKE IN CHINA

 

About 700 houses have collapsed after a magnitude 5.5 earthquake in southwestern China.

 

At least 30 people were injured according to the official news agaency Xinhua.

 

The epicentre of the quake was the city of Xishan in the southern Yunnan province 50 km from a popular tourist resort called Dali.

 

The situation for 3 of the injured is said to be serious/grave according to the news agency AP.

 

A total of 2,500 houses were damaged.

AT LEAST 8 DEAD IN CONNECTION WITH HEAVY SNOWFALLS IN NORTH JAPAN

 

The victims include a woman and her 3 children. The snow masses had buried their car in the town of Nakashibetsu on the island of Hokkaido.

 

All 4 were recovered and brought to a hospital, but their lives could not be saved.

 

A 23-year-old woman is also among the dead. She froze to death after having managed to get out of her car that had been trapped / buried by snow.

 

InYubetsu a 53-year-old fisherman died as he protected his 9-year-old daughter with his own body from a snow storm. The girl survived.

POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE (MAGNITUDE 6.2) IN GUATEMALA CITY

 

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook Guatemala's capital Monday.

 

The epicentre was less than 1 mile south-east of Guatemala City - according to US Geological Survey (USGS). It occurred 20 miles below the surface of the earth.

 

There are no reports of injured people or material damage.

 

In 1976, 23,000 people died in a magnitude 7.5 quake 16 miles north of Guatemala City, and last year 50 people died inan earthquake.

MAGNITUDE 5.9 (55 and 5.1) EARTHQUAKES IN MEXICO CITY

 

Thousands ran into the streets during the quakes that could be felt in the capital. Several buildings were swaying and consequently evacuated. The epicentres of the 2 quakes were both in the state of Oaxaca - the epicentre of the first of them was 50 km south-west of Pinotepa Nacional at the Pacific Ocean.

NEWS IN RELATION TO NATURAL DISASTERS ON 27 MARCH 2013

 

 

1 PERSON DEAD IN TAIWANESE EARTHQUAKE (MAGNITUDE 6.1)

 

1 person died and 19 were slightly injured and scyscrapers in Taiwan's capital Taipei were swaying caused by a powerful earthquake in central Taiwan on Wednesday before noon. Some fires broke out as a consequence of the quake, and all train traffic was cancelled.

 

A 72-year-old woman vas trapped by a collapsing wall in a temple in the Nantou region - she died on the scene of the accident.

 

The magnitude 6.1 earthquake had its epicentre 48 km / 5 miles east of Nantou and could be felt all over Taiwan. It occurred at a depth of about 2 miles below the surface of the earth and is the most powerful quake hitting Taiwan this year.

 

During the 2 hours that followed the time of the quake, 5 aftershocks were recorded - their magnitudes were between 3.7 and 4.3.

 

Taiwan is located close to the joint (connection) between 2 tectonic plates that push against each other.

 

About 2,400 people were killed in a magnitude 6.7 quake in Nantou in 1999.

3 MAN SWEPT AWAY BY AN AVALANCHE IN NORTHERN PART OF NORWAY - NO HOPE FOR THEM ACCORDING TO THE POLICE

 

A helmet and a scooter is all that has been found after the men. The weather in the area is very bad which makes a search mission very difficult, if not impossible.

 

2 people died in avalanche accident in Troms county - in just 1½ week. This is reported by broadcaster NRK.

 

The risk of avalanches in northern Norway is very high now and in the next couple of days (level 3 alert).

88 MINERS TRAPPED IN LANDSLIDE IN CHINA

 

A massive landslide in a mining area in Tibet buried 88 miners. The landslide occurred at dawn local time in the district of Maizhokunggar at the Tibetan capital city of Lhasa.

 

The mine belongs to China's state-run gold company according to the Chinese news agency of New China / Xinhua. The landslide is said to have hit a region of about 4 square kilometers.

 

Big excavators are in operation in an attempt to dig away masses of clay from the mine. The local hospitals are at highest alert, but there are still no signs from the trapped miners.

SNOW CHAOS IN POLAND

 

100,000 households in central and north-eastern Poland are without electricity / power after heavy snowfall. Toppling trees tore down power lines. Most of the affected areas were situated in rural regions, but also small towns in the Warsaw region are affected. The train traffic is considerably affected.

3 WINTER SPORTS ENTHUSIASTS DEAD IN AVALANCHE ACCIDENT IN SOUTH TYROL - 1 PERSON MISSING (IN THE ORTLER RANGE)

 

An avalanche in South Tyrol killed 3 winter sports enthusiasts on Monday 1 April 2013. 1 person is missing, whereas other trapped could be rescued according to "Südtirol Online".

 

According to most recent media reports the dead persons are 2 Italians and 1 German.

 

The accident occurred in an altitude of more than 3,000 m in the Ortler range.

 

According to Austrian media, the tourists were off-piste instead of using the prepared (more safe) piste. And apparently they triggered the avalanche.

 

Much snow had fallen in the past few days.

 

Monday, there was an avalanche alert, level 3 (out of 5 levels).

MINOR EARTHQUAKE - MAGNITUDE 4.9 - ON THE CANARIAN ISLAND OF EL HIERRO

 

On Sunday, 31 March 2013, the smallest Canarian Island - El Hierro - is said to have been shaken by a new earthquake in a series of quakes during the past few weeks (I have not read about it before - April's fool ?).

 

The epicentre was 10 km west of the island in the Atlantic.

AT LEAST 11 DEAD IN MASSIVE FLOODING AFTER HEAVY RAINFALLS ON MAURITIUS

 

The flooding followed heavy rain in Port Louis, the capital on Mauritius (an island state) claiming at least 11 human lives on Sunday, 31.3.13.

 

According to the police 6 dead bodies were found in an underground pedestrian crossing - one body was found near the harbour and 2 other dead bodies were found in an underground parking house.

 

One person is said to have lost his/her life as a consequence of myocardial infarction (heart + infarction) caused by the choc of the water beginning to rise.

 

Prime Minsiter Navinchandra Ramgoolam declared Monday to be a day of mourning. He went on the radio - in his address he made the climate change responsible for the floodings.

 

Hundred(s of) people have lost their homes due to the bad weather (heavy rain and ensuing floodings).

DEATH TOLL OF 100 PEOPLE AFTER LANDSLIDE IN TIBET AND EXPLOSION IN COAL MINE IN NORTH-EASTERN CHINA - ALL VICTIMS WERE MINERS

 

2 mining areas in China & Tibet have experienced accidents probably resulting in 100 dead miners.

 

83 miners were trapped after a devastating landslide in Tibet. 21 dead bodies have been recovered according to Chinese radio. There is no hope of finding survivors in the 30 m high masses of mud and rocks.

 

The landslide had surprised the miners 68 km east of Tibets capital, Lhasa in their homes. They were trapped / buried by about 2 million cubic metres of rocks covering an area of 4 square kilometres

 

28 other miners were killed only few hours later by a gas explosion in a coal mine in north-eastern China.

AT LEAST 13 PEOPLE DEAD IN CONNECTION WITH ACCIDENT IN COLLAPSING RAVEL PIT IN TANZANIA

 

So far 13 dead bodies have been recovered.

 

The accident occurred in Moshono near the town of Arusha close to the border to Kenya.

 

The cause is not clear, but it had rained a lot (torrential rain).

 

According to Arusha's mayor, 8 workers had loaded a truck as a round 18 m high wall of the pit had collapsed. 6 workers were on a second truck and 2 drivers were in the gravel pit.
