How can I practice PROPERLY with my band?

Featured Replies

Hey all.

Ok...I'm in a band, we only have my room (which I couldn't fit a drumkit in) to practice in.

I play guitar and keyboards, I have a (fairly rubbish) bassist who seemingly can't even play the Fix You bassline. And a pretty awesome drummer (who is also very into coldplay)

I haven't sung with or infront of them yet (which I'm a bit nervous about).

I really have no clue as to how I'm gonna teach them their parts to songs. I don't even play bass properly!

Now, we do have a place we can book, but we need to know the songs before-hand, don't we?

My major problem Is my bassist. Whenever I ask him (very nicely, almost hinting) to get bass lessons, he declines, but he REALLY needs them!!!! He just can't cope with any speed of song.

He has this view: If I was to play a song at a set tempo (say 100bpm), he feels trapped in that speed, and wants out. That's a load of ruddy old BOLLOCKS!!!!!!

Please, could anyone help me out here? we want to start performing soon, but we heven't even perfected one song yet!

Get another bassist is the best option.

If he won't make time to learn to play the songs proper....

Let everybody learn the song on their own at home.

So when you practice with the band you only have to put it together.

Find a room with some more space to practice,Isn't there a place where you can hire practice rooms for a few hours?

1) get the bassist to take lessons or look for a new one! as harsh as it sounds, the only way!

2) get a bigger room, or at least one where you got all your instruments, and i mean ALL you instruments including drums!

3) meet once every two weeks or so, that you practise together etc.; meanwhile, everyone needs to learn their stuff at home...

4) forget about performing! practise the songs properly until you have at least 5 songs which ar (nearly) perfect - THEN think about performances.

5) when practising together, start off with a known song you can play best. then try the new stuff. do that like 2 hours, and have a break inbetween. then you play some known stuff again and finally you have a little jam session - for ideas and fun and stuff :D

good luck!

Hey, thanks for all that help.

I have a place which I can hire out (5 gbp per hour).

It's actualy quite hard to find a bassist, not many people in my school play it. I guess if someone plays drums, they'd be fairly good at bass?

Anyways, I'll just keep looking!

I wouldn't pressure a person to take lessons mainly because if you learn to play on your own you develope a more unique style. Some of my friends who have never taken any formal music lessons are some of the most talented people I know. Just give your bassist time.

No, get a bassist that knows what he's doing.

A good bassist that had/have lessons or that thaught himsleft proper to play it.

And like people saying: Bass is almost same as guitar and it's easier than guitar.. ignore that nonsense.. It's totaly different and not easy at all, well, if you play it the right way.

My bassist was the same way. Just keep telling him he sucks until he finally gets good, and then keep telling him he sucks. Worked for us. Until we broke up.

lucky me, my bassist isn't that bad at all! he just started playing and well, some slapping is there and of course finger picking.... the only one who makes me sad is my drummer, he cannot take lessons right now... but he will start this year so i hope it'll work...

You really can't rush these things. But I do agree, getting a new bassist would probably be the best option for the band's quality of sound.

Just take it slow. If you just started, you really shouldn't be performing at gigs yet. Good luck!

Best of luck with your band. :)

goodluck man, me and my friend Erik have been playing for a while and we've got another problem and it's koncetration...we stop playing and just do someting else instead...I know it's silly but anywaysxD...good luck!
