I'm seeing Jonsi on Friday! And if my brother comes through I might get to go to the acoustic gig prior! But either way I can't wait until then! :D

I feel like everyone but me is seeing Jónsi :disappointed:

^^YOU MIGHT BE GOING TO THE AUSTIN ACOUSTIC GIG?!??!?!?? :bigcry:

I'm infinitely jealous

^ No not Austin, Salt Lake City. :D

:wideeyed:

Got back from the show. It was really good. Working on posting pictures, but I am lame at this stuff.

Here you go. Sorry the pictures are not super clear. I am more of a memorabilia guy, but I snapped these real quick with my iPhone (thus, the poor quality). He hung out for a good 10 minutes, so I was able to take these photos after I got my albums signed. The top pictures are from the show I attended the next night. Enjoy.

they cancelled the acoustic gigs :bigcry: so thats a no go this afternoon ,but I still have the concert! :D

The acoustic gig was only 4 songs in Los Angeles so that's not much of a loss. I meant to post a review but got lazy after I finally figured out how to post pics. Maybe you will be able to give a proper recap. Enjoy the show; it's really good.

:wacky: that's lovely! :wacky:

you were sooo close to him :sweatdrop:

the fuck is wrong with jonsi ?

A few weeks ago, we reported that Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi had a series of free acoustic shows, titled "Go Closer", planned at record stores across the U.S. during his current fall tour. The second show in the series was supposed to go down tonight at Salt Lake City, Utah's Slowtrain, but as of today, that performance and all others in the series have been cancelled.

According to a statement on Jónsi's website from his management, Jónsi is not to blame for the cancellations:"It is with regret that we announce the immediate cancellation of Jonsi's series of acoustic performances at indie record stores under the banner 'Go Closer', scheduled to take place during his current US tour. We, the management, are going to take the blame here, since it was us who thought this was a great opportunity to counterpoint the weight and scale of production at his theatrical shows with something super low-key and intimate. We talked him into it. And we stand by the fact that it is a great idea… on paper. Jonsi himself, however, was always sceptical about how in would pan out in reality. And standing there nose-to-nose with fans in the cold light of day the other day in Origami Records, Los Angeles, he had the sudden and undeniable realisation that this is not the environment in which he flourishes. Arguably it was the most uncomfortable experience of his ten years in the public eye, and as a result we are unwilling to put him in the line of fire again. To those of you who saw it in Echo Park, cherish it, because it ain't going to happen again. To those people who were looking forward to *going closer* in Salt Lake City, Austin, Asheville, Atlanta and Chicago we can only say we are sorry, and ask for your understanding and forgiveness. And remember it's not Jonsi’s fault. - John Best & Dean O'Connor"

YES. WHAT IS THIS. ;___;

The only thing I can say is that Origami Records is super, super small. He did an acoustic gig at a bigger record store up in San Francisco, Amoeba Records, for Record Store Day, and he must have been good enough with the experience that he at least signed on the dotted line for these shows. But Origami Records is super small - probably 1/10 the size of Amoeba. My understanding is that they were only able to fit 40 or so people into the store.

My point is that this is an entirely different level of intimate. The people in the record store are essentially in your lap. Maybe losing all boundaries between himself and his audience made him uncomfortable. I don't know; I just wanted to give you some background on Origami so that you had some context. I, too, am surprised that he would cancel these gigs.

Yeah, the thing I don't like is that he signed up to do the shows, and people bought his vinyl album and made travel plans based on this. If you don't like the small shows, then you never have to do them again. But at least fulfill your obligation.

Concert was incredible! I don't have time right now to give a review, but I will leave yall with a couple photos and then later I will give yall a link to the rest of them. By the way I got to be in the front row! And I'm pretty sure that Jonsi smiled at me a few times when he came over to my side :D

So here is my Jonsi concert day story:

I woke up went to classes and then came home, grabbed a quick bite of lunch and then left at 1 to head on down to Utah, I live in Idaho right now going to University. So the drive is about 4 hours. Lots of time to jam out to all sorts of music :D Anyways I arrive in Salt Lake City and drive around trying to find this venue called The Complex, it's new and well nobody knows where it is. After driving around like an idiot for 30 min I finally find it. So I get out and wait in the line. It was alright, I made friends with the people around me and discovered that we were all here to see Jonsi (the complex has space for another concert to go on at the same time which this night was Matt Costa) Anyway, I have my ticket being held at will call so I had to wait around for that to open and when it does it not even a physical ticket, they give me a wrist band, and it doesn't even have anything to do with Jonsi, it's some myspace band. Lame!!

So then we proceed to wait some more until 7 when the doors open. We all rush in and I am successful at procuring myself a front row spot!! It was lovely! So for the next hour they have this peaceful piano tinkling music playing and well everyone is very civilized. Everyone was chatting to each other commenting on how much they loved Jonsi music and I have to tell yall that is quite something! I'm used to being shoved and cursed at, during the concerts I have been to.

So 8 o'clock comes around and the opening act comes out, Mountain Men. Not what I was expecting at all! It is these 3 girls who pretty much do everything acapella minus a little bit of guitar here and there. They looked absolutely chuffed that we were listening to them and clapping for them after each song. I'm telling you seriously polite crowd! So they finish and we have to wait 30 min for Jonsi. Everyone is getting anxious, chants start a bit and so does clapping.

Finally the lights dim and the ambiance music stops and out comes Jonsi and his drummer. And thus they began with Stars in Still Water. The entire concert was beautiful. No one was shouting, everyone was just soaking it all in. It was seriously fabulous!!

He came over to my side of the stage frequently and it was most enjoyable! After the show I went and bought the dvd and he hand signed a bunch of them, I got one of the sign ones! :D

Then I left and drove home! The End. :P

^ Nice review! I had a similar experience - absolute shock at the politeness of the crowd. I wish more shows were like that.

The stage show is fabulous. It really compliments the music perfectly.

I got the signed DVD, too. $15 is such a bargain.

:snobby:

You guys don't know how shy he is do you?

Well, anyway, someone on the Jónsi forum posted this about the last acoustic in-store gig Jónsi had:

"Hey—

I'm new to this forum, but I am a long time SR fan, and I just wanted to try to shed some light on what happened in Echo Park and why I believe that the in-store tour was canceled.

In theory it was a great idea, but in execution it was an absolute shambles. Jonsi showed up about 30 to 45 minutes late, which in it of itself, isn't a problem. The traffic is an absolute nightmare here, so I obviously didn't blame him for his lateness. However, once he got here, he was obviously very uncomfortable with the situation.

To set the stage, there was around 35 of us in the store and another 100 or so outside in the rain, and Jonsi was forced to perform standing on a chair in the corner of the store b/c Origami Vinyl weren't bothered to actually prepare some sort of stage or step ladder for him to stand on. Because of that, it was nearly impossible for anyone not in front to see him (esp. my girlfriend who is 5'2), and it was actually quite difficult to hear his guitar as well. It wasn't helped by the fact that the store refused to close the front door (which was possibly due to fire restrictions), so we were also fighting off the sounds of the street, passing buses, people talking outside, etc.

He only played four songs (I was told he'd be playing for 35 to 40 minutes), and two of those four songs (the admittedly stunning "Icicle Sleeves" and "Go Do") he had to restart after he flubbed chord changes (he seemed really nervous). Obviously, it was incredible to hear his voice in a truly acoustic (microphone-less) setting, but it was an ultimately disappointing performance, because any fan of his work knows what he is capable of. When I heard that the rest of the dates were canceled, I really couldn't have been less surprised, as nobody acquitted themselves well at the LA instore.

More annoying was the fact that everyone had to buy a copy of Go on vinyl to gain entrance, which means that my girlfriend and I now have three copies of it. It was obviously a money-making tour driven by his management/label, and I have to say that it was a serious misstep by them. As for Jonsi, I was disappointed by his overall performance and demeanor, but if you put a great goalkeeper at center forward, you can't blame him for not scoring goals. He was put in an awful position by his management, so I can understand why things went down the way they did. I'll always be a big fan of his, but from the overall reaction of the crowd as he slunk away after playing for less than 20 minutes, he may have lost a few fans on Sunday. I put that on his management.

Sorry for the rant, just wanted to try to clear somethings up. Now back to work!

Dan"

^ No doubt. But he was shy before he booked gigs. I'm a big believer in fulfilling obligations. You never have to do it again, but finish what you signed up for.

Not that I really care. He's free to do what he wants. I skipped the instore all together because I knew it was going to be a zoo.

^^ Oh thats sad that they had to buy the Vinyl, but no it wasn't a money making tour, the acoustic gig in SLC was free, you just had to wait in line to get a ticket.

There were a few people in line saying how sad they were that he wasn't going to do it, as was I, but no one was giving him crap about it. We all understood. ;)

Playing to small audiences like that is incredibly uncomfortable. It's not something I'd want to do more than once. So I can understand that. But the vinyl thing is ridiculous! surely that was just a mistake with the organisers or whatever?
