Help with pedals and effects :$

Featured Replies

Hi

I know there's been lots of questions about this but my dad has finally decided to buy me an electric guitar.

I'm going to the US in a couple days and I'm hoping I find a guitar I like there. The thing for me is the pedals and that stuff.

I would like you to explain to me if it's not too much to ask what's each effect. I've seen pedals of "distortion, sustain, overdrive" and some others.

I know what the first is of course butI don't know if those pedals of distotion can be set so that it does not sound like a heavy metal guitar you know to choose a level of distortion. And also I can do this with just the amp right?? so is it worth it if our budget is quite low.

Can you tell me an example of a song in which some effects are used so that I could decide? Mainly on electric I would play Snow Patrol, Muse, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paramore, Green Day, Fall Out Boy. In that order so, what do you suggest?

For a start I wanna buy just one pedal and later I will get more but what do you suggest?

first of all:

tell us how much you want to spend at all!

then what guitar you want to buy and -very important- what amp?

then we'll be able to help you further.

HOWEVER: you don't really need a distortion pedal as a beginner if your amp is good. most amps have some effects built in which are useful and not too bad.

i'd choose a multieffects-pedal! there you have distortion, chorus, flanger, phaser, delay, echo, reverb, compressor, noise gate, EQ and all that stuff!

i advise you to take the ZOOM G2.1u! good quality multi-effects-pedal and absolutely affordable for anyone! but: DO NEVER EVER BUY A CHEAPO AMP (neither a cheapo guitar!) !!

If you're a beginner, have you tried learning songs off ultimate-guitar.com? It's an easier way to go about it, plus people mention what pedals are needed for particular songs.

Compressors keep the guitar from getting too quiet or loud. Distortion and overdrive won't give you a heavy metal sound. It depends on the amount of drive that you put into it.
