cp87
Got two questions. There is a "synthy" sound Jonny does on Lovers in Japan right at 17 seconds into the song. He's just hangin on one note, but the effects make it sound real full. Anyone got any idea what's he is using? Also, tryin to figure out what he is using 2:18 into Death and All His Friends. I'm new to the forum and apologize if these questions have been asked ;)
princesanji
for the 4580932846598236958023958th time: we don't know (as of yet) ! ;) but i think a lot of Phaser, Chorus, Reverb, Distortion + tremolopicking will do pretty well. (for LiJ, don't remember DAAHF correctly, though it's some distortion, reverb and a little chorus, but don't forget to chose the right guitar&PU)
cp87
You all don't know yet?! Lol! That's one of the most famous songs they do! I can reconize what he is doing. My question is the names of the pedals. It's obvious he uses alot of reverb. Question is, how much, what pedal, and settings. Are you at least familiar with the names of the effects on DAAHF? QuestionsOfScience
I know, it's weird. I bet you need tons of delay on LIJ and a Fender Jaguar (Or Jazzmaster, whatever Jonny plays) But, do NOT forget lots of delay, reverb and chorus, they're the main thing you're looking for to get the sound for LIJ. The DAAHF guitar sound is quite crunchy. You'll need reverb. And (I'm listening to it now) you'll need slight delay, coz I can hear the previous note repeated after he plays a new note. If I'm wrong, then oh well.
TyM218
He for sure uses phaser and reverb in lovers In Japan. Or at least in the live version.
princesanji
he neither uses the jaguar nor the jazzmaster live! a thinline is good aswell ;) (though the Jazzmaster was used for the studio version and maybe even during recent live appearances) well, who cares about the exact pedals?! however, he uses : - Fulltone OCD pedal - EHX Micro POG - Pro Co RAT Vintage Rat distortion - Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer - Boss TU2 tuner (x2) - HBE Power Screamer - Boss RV3 reverb - MXR Phase 90 - Boss DD5 delay - Line 6 DL4 (x2, at least while X&Y era) - Ernie Ball Volume pedals - Midi floor controller - Voodoo Labs Ground Control - TC Electronic 2290 Delay (x2) - Line 6 Echo Pro (x2) - Eventide H7600 expensive stuff, have fun experimenting!
yellowtalk
To clear up the original query: I'm lead to believe after a bit of reserach that Jonny is using the Eventide Eclipse for the most part of Lovers In Japan. Below i've posted a video showing a variety of presets from the device: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1M7Y0vSzeHc]YouTube- Eventide Eclipse FX demo[/ame] If I'm correct, Jonny is using the effect either at 1:17-1:30 and/or 7:10 - End Hope that helps :)
princesanji
he's using the eventide throughout the whole song i suppose! also on LiT (ii) however, jonny uses an Eventide H7600, which has even more sounds and stuff... and which is twice as expensive ;)
cp87
That's it! Thanks guys ;) ya looks like an Eventide H7600 can be up to $4 grand lol! Even the cheaper ones are around $900 :( anyone got any ideas of other effects that can make simaliar sounds for half the cost? Lol
princesanji
um, try some reverb pedals... (they definitely belong to the most expensive ones, that explains the eventide's price), Boss RV5 e.g. also MXR Phase 90 and a distortion pedal (proco rat, TS(any),...) ever thought about a Guitar-Synthesizer? that'll do fine, I suppose... although you practically can order effects online, you must try them out in a store... btw:the eventide rack units belong to the group of Signal Processors. there are also cheaper ones that are good... e.g. the products from Alesis or Lexicon (MX300 / MX400 ...) EDIT: otherwise you might spend 15.790€ (~22,720USD) for a LEXICON 960 MLAD MULTI PROCESSOR... wow, this thing has got a rack unit and an external controller pad 'cause there are so many functions and knobs and stuff.... incredible! cp87
btw:the eventide rack units belong to the group of Signal Processors.<<<< Be patient with me, but explain what a signal processor is. I know the eventide is a rack, but cant you set a preset sound on it and have a foot switch at your pedalboard?
juliejulle
Wow, I clearly don't belong here.. I must admit that I have no idea what you are writting about.. I just know that it sounds good ;)
PianoRocker
Don't try to copy the exact sound, try to find a sound that's your own but useable.
cp87
It's the effect I want. Not to use all the time. It obviously wouldn't sound the exact same ever even if I tried. I want the effect he is using.
princesanji
well, then you definitely have to pay the Eventide H7600 for ~4000$ a signal processor is just a device that models a signal (the guitar's signal here, obviously!) in a certain way (depends on the type of effect, of course!) using 1 or more processors (the computer stuff :D ). the usual pedals are not using those, which is why they don't belong to the signal processors. that only might be of importance when you are looking for some stuff like the eventides etc.
yellowtalk
I wouldn't mind purchasing the Lexicon stuff that Jonny had around the AROBTTH era that made some pretty cool sounds! I.e. A Rush Of Blood To The Head intro
princesanji
what was the lexicon jonny had? -- just found out, it's a Lexicon MPX G2 wow, i actually didn't know what he used for the awesome intro... (guess it's the same + delay as for spies, see on youtube "coldplay live spies") ... but makes sense, it really sounds like some expensive rack stuff... to the Eventide Eclipse Video: the sustain (or ist that the decay phase?) of the 3rd effect preset sound kinda like the intro of "Low", doesn't it? Oh yeah, I never thought about that Spies intro, i guess you are right. Yes, that 3rd preset does, it also sounds like the outro to Twisted Logic
TyM218
I heard the RV-5 is good for making atmospheric sounds like on LiJ and LiT ii
cp87
I heard the RV-5 is good for making atmospheric sounds like on LiJ and LiT ii Ya the RV-5 with modulation cranked up sounds pretty good. Still doesnt make anywhere near the ambient sound of the eventide. Does anyone know the main differences between the Eventide H7600 and the Eventide Eclipse, other than price? Lol. princesanji
1: the eventide h7600 got more and different stuff than the eclipse... just google it ;) or on the eventid website 2: is it the eventide h7600 or the lexicon mpx g2 he used during the x&y tour? and was one of them used for white shadows?? listen at the end, it sound like a pitch shifter/octaver effect when he does the single notes... sometimes up and sometimes down an octave, just a very quiet and slightly audible effect....
