It's the perfect excuse for women who are accused of making one too many shopping trips.

A study has revealed that High Street sprees are good for your health.

The average woman burns around 385 calories - the equivalent of a piece of carrot cake or two large glasses of wine - trudging around stores each week.

They notch up 154 miles a year - the same distance as hiking from London to Nottingham - hunting for bargains.

Small wonder then more than half the 2,000 polled said they felt more exhausted after a day's shopping than a workout at the gym.

The average woman covers 2.96 miles on a shopping trip and spends around 2.5 hours browsing in stores every week, according to the study, commissioned by Debenhams. In contrast, men spend an average 50 minutes and cover just 1.5 miles per week.

Women take an average 7,305 steps each time they head out on a spree, almost three quarters the 10,000 daily number recommended by the NHS. Add to that the weight of bags full of bargains and you have a workout worthy of the gym.

Researchers calculated that around three hours of shopping could help burn off the 495 calories in a Big Mac. Two hours could work off the 283 calories in a typical latte coffee.

Although nine out of ten women surveyed said they wore trainers or comfortable shoes for a big shopping session, two thirds said they didn't count it as a valid form of exercise.

A third said they went on a 'serious' shopping trip once a week, while eight out of ten women admitted they shopped for longer and covered larger distances when they went shopping with friends. They also stopped for lunch or coffee part way through the day.

But serious shoppers don't seem to bother with pitstops.

Forty-five per cent of those surveyed said they didn't take a break and instead 'shopped until they dropped'.

In a separate poll, experts calculated that women burned around five calories for every minute spent browsing the shelves - almost 48,000 per year. That is the equivalent of 25 days' worth of a woman's recommended daily intake of 1,940 calories.

The study revealed women make around 11 shopping trips - spending around 13 hours - on the High Street, supermarket or local shop each month.

Two thirds of the 3,000 polled by Skinny Cow low fat desserts say they did not amble sedately around the shops, but instead preferred to walk briskly to get everything done as quickly as possible.

BREAKDOWN OF RESULTS:

Shopping trips per year x hours walked each time

Total hours spent shopping each year

Clothes shopping

24 x 1 hour, 59 minutes

47 hours, 31 minutes

Food shopping

60 x 1 hour, 22 minutes

82 hours, 12 minutes

Local shopping

48 x 38 minutes

30 hours, 14 minutes

TOTAL

159 hours, 57 minutes

So using a rate of five calories per minute, the average woman will burn 47,985 calories each month.

(Calorie burn rate is based on an average body weight of 175 pounds, walking at an average speed of 3mph)

That's an expensive way to burn calories...

Not many women can afford to go on a shopping spree every single week. Burning off a single piece of carrot cake when spending what, £100, £150?
