rule13
I'm spanish and I've listened this song like hundreds of times... Why do they say "I spent the night with the queen of Spain" at 1:50? I don't have any problems with that but if any monarchy fan discover that, they could be in trouble:D Lovely song, and funny for me and the spanish coldplayers! Cobalt
But Rainy Day is not about XIX century's events and now the Queen of Spain looks like this: I think that's even more of a reason for this to not be the correct lyric (no offenses)

marina_
i read somewhere that gwyneth did a sort of reality-documentary in spain ("Spain - On The Road Again") and then people started to call her "queen of spain"...but i'm not sure of my source
The Final Track
Then there was rain I spent the night with the queen of Spain My lonely little heart well it broke again Time so vicious The deeper that the knife goes in The more you win You end up with less than where you begin The deeper that the knife goes in

Calanon
I love the song and I listen to alot, but I've never noticed this before. Now that you've pointed it out it feels obvious. Strange of Coldplay to put lyrics like that. :shocked2:
KirstenEO
I think Mari's probably right and that the inspriation for this came from Gwyneth... She was an exchange student in Spain, wasn't she? And she's an adopted daughter of queen Talavera of Spain. Perhaps the idea came from that influence and then just took off in the traditional odd/oblique/hey-that-sounds-good-let's-throw-that-in Coldplay direction.
