BBC presenters at the Winter Olympics are wearing jackets bearing the logo of one of the skiing world's most expensive brands.

Their official BBC jackets carry the letter K, for Kjus.

By showing it on screen, the corporation may be breaking strict product placement rules and effectively giving the brand free advertising.

BBC guidelines ban logos being shown on screen to avoid the impression it is promoting a product.

But Clare Balding (pictured) wore a black Kjus jacket on BBC 2 at the weekend.

Her colleague, Graham Bell, sported a similar jacket and Kerrin Lee-Gartner, one of the BBC commentary team, wore a white one.

All have the K on them, as well as a yellow logo that says BBC Sport.

Kjus ski jackets start at £500 and go up to £1,000.

John Whittingdale MP, Tory chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, said: 'The BBC is funded by the licence fee payer and people would not expect to see commercial advertising on the BBC because of that.'

A BBC spokesman denied product placement and said: 'Having looked at a wide range of potential suppliers we were able to secure a bulk purchase deal for the jackets worn by our team.

'This ensured a costeffective solution and value for money to the licence fee payer.'

In 2008, it emerged that a host of BBC TV reporters were wearing North Face jackets. The BBC denied any special deals with the company.
