March 5, 201016 yr I don't, just cos you are a big band doesn't mean you are any better live than a less popular one. One of my favourite gigs ever was Dutch Uncles and Dananananaykroyd in a tiny venue, it was so amazing, better than a lot of "big" bands I've seen, way better.
March 5, 201016 yr Yeah but collectively, for a 'best live band' ever or for a year or decade etc., there's way too many underground or less popular bands for enough people to agree with. And I'm not referring to the examples you just mentioned or your opinion (Or Italian Plastics), but a lot of the time when someone recommends some unknown underground band live, they usually aren't that great at all but because they seem under-rated. I know it's happened to me a few times when I've totally over-rated a band because they were unknown. I guess the term 'Best Live Band' means that people often leave their real opinions behind in their attempt to give an all-encompassing answer, when it comes to personal opinion we get a bit more cowardly and "imho". Like instead of saying those acts are possibly the 'Best Live Band' you said it was one of your favourite gigs.
March 5, 201016 yr Well yeah, I don't think you can possibly say one band is the "best" live band. Music is a pretty personal thing and it's more about what you get out of it than what is technically the best, you can't sit and tick off boxes about what makes a band good live. It's not just the music, it's the feel, the energy, the crowd, the atmposhere. A band can be technically brilliant live, but if they just stand there flawlessly playing the songs while the crowd stands around nodding pretentiously then it's not going to be the best live experience you've witnessed.
March 5, 201016 yr That's why I think any kind of awards or recognition for music or otherwise, is pretty much deemed useless in this day and age when there's so much variety
March 5, 201016 yr Completely agree, that's why I just take no notice of them. I know some people though who agree with that statement but then sit and watch these award shows and get genuinely annoyed when their favourite band doesn't win an award.

March 5, 201016 yr ^yeah... Big bands don't really mean anything... I guess it has to do more w/ your experience. I mean I've seen bands like Grizzly Bear and Arcade Fire for a fairly cheap price and they were amazing, yet I saw Bob Dylan and he was terrible (worst concert I've ever went to). Then again I've seen Paul McCartney, Radiohead & Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)... and they were all amazing
March 5, 201016 yr I think we've talked about Bob Dylan live on here before, for the past 10 years he's been a non-starter, so it's a given that he's terrible. I don't think the name Bob Dylan and the legend that it is can really even be associated with his live performances in the past decade or so. His voice is shot, and well, everything else is pretty much shot.
March 5, 201016 yr ^Yeah definitely. I mean his back-up band was really great and tight! But the problem I had was (I think I talked to you about this before but I'll reiterate for others) that like you mentioned his voice was shot, I could only understand about a dozen words he said the entire concert, the songs I recognized I didn't until the song was 1/2 way over, and most importantly he had no crowd interaction... I got the impression he didn't even want to be there.
