EMS / Ambulance Service

Just wondering what your opinions are of your local emergency medical service (or whatever you call it in your area). Is it crap? Awesome? Have you ever needed it before? Know anyone that works in it?

Dunno. I'm just a little interested in the subject and kinda curious. I'm getting my technician certification this summer if all goes well.

Not really. I've met plenty of people that have a lot to say about it.

Whether or not I'll find any here is another question, haha.

A friend of mine broke his leg when we're out, we called 911 and it took about 3 hours for them to get there. I know what you're going to say, maybe someone was dying and needed the help more.

But 3 hours is a bit too much even with a broken leg.

I saved my sisters life once and had to call 999, it was pretty traumatic and they were incredibly helpful on the phone telling me what to do and got here very quickly.

The reason I have a problem with this thread is I've seen you mention about 1,000,000 times that you are getting your license, even posting pics in uniform, now you've made a thread just to tell more people.

Oi. Regardless of whether he was dying or not, 3 hours is a hell of a lot of time to be in severe pain. What a horrible turn out time. And either way, you could possibly have a ruptured artery with a broken leg, which is life threatening so they should've been there ASAP because of that possibility.

Hopefully that was just a bad call and not typical of the entire service. Sorry you had such a poor experience.

!!! Glad that situation went smoothly then.

Ah so you're stalking me. :P Well, you can't blame me for being passionate about it. And this topic is only the 3rd time I've mentioned EMS. :inquisitive:

I guess I must have just seen those 3 posts then + your fucking avatar.

Yeah I think that situation made me really protective of my sister and we have a pretty good relationship with each other, we aren't weirdly close or anything, but I can't remember us ever fighting.

It's ok :\

My brother suffered seizures and the first time we needed an ambuance it was grand because he was already in town in the doctors office.

But the second time it was ridiculous. They had no idea where we lived and my mom had to drive out and direct them. We don't live out in the middle or anything.

We live only about 5 minutes from where they were coming from.

I've had 2 incidents, with varying impressions.

I was in a very serious bicycling accident 5 years ago. I was unconscious and have no memory of the event but the angels were on my side. First off, an off-duty EMT saw it happen and immediately took control of the situation (I was unconscious & seizing). My husband is a doctor but he was too emotionally involved and was glad for the EMT. I was ambulanced to a parking lot where the medical helicopter could land. The pilot allowed my husband to fly with me, which I understand is very unusual. He said the flight nurse was incredible. In the trauma, my husband never got her name. We tracked her down and months later I wrote her a letter thanking her for her care & kindness....none of which I remember.

Another time (again, a biking accident) a friend fell (his wheel got caught in RR tracks) and he broke both his ulna & radius, so basically his arm was dangling between his elbow & wrist. The EMTs weren't even going to splint it before putting him on a stretcher. My cousin was there and he works ski patrol. He had to tell them to stabilize his arm before moving him! Seemed a no-brainer to me, but they were going to just let his arm dangle. That wasn't such a great experience.

For what I have experienced, EMS in my town and in other towns, their service has been satisfactory. About 2 days ago, my brother in law had a bad seizure and the EMS showed up within 3 minutes.

What a fucking stupid question this is, seriously.

and a bomb landed in reply to the question.
