Coldplay Community Questions

Featured Replies

Hi I know this is usually frowned upon in a first post so I will make it brief and hope you indulge me.

I am conducting research about social media and band websites in the music industry. I would be very grateful if you complete a 2 min survey. Its for my dissertation and about @coldplay

You guys are superb. :D Lots and lots of love, and virtual karma for your time.

Done!

What method are you using to analyse your data?

Why did you not use a five-level Likert scale?

I predict you won't get much diversity.

The use of this information is quite unclear to me because you don't ask for relations to other artists or much about general use of social networks...

I saw that it's for your dissertation.

What is your research question / hypothesis?

Is every band website seen as a group on its own in the analysis?

If these are too many questions to reply to here I'll write an email. :)

On a quick note, Congrats on becomming a Moderator, I just noticed it:)

Please note you have been officially Frowned Upon. Enjoy your eternal shame.

I'm 19.

Do I answer 15-19 or 19-24?

Hey thanks for everyone that has done this for me.

What method are you using to analyse your data?

I am hoping to use some variance indices and to test the validity of my hypotheses with partial least squares and ordinal least squares.

from there will look at the reliability again, by bootstrapping (resampling) the data because they are such small datasets.

Why did you not use a five-level Likert scale?

I have been advised to use a seven-point likert-type scale with those scale poles from my dissertation tutor and the foundations of other studies studying the effects of flow in websites. (allowing me to compare to previous studies more fully)

The use of the information is to illustrate some qualitative case studies with consumers/fans response and whether social media is now part of the expected music product rather than just an augmentation.

I am using 'flow theory' which has been used by some theorists to judge how immersed you become in an activity, and whether this has a negative or positive impact on loyalty and how likely you are to recommend the sites based on the positive feelings generated from 'engaging' and 'becoming immersed'.

In fact having started this survey I have realised I should probably have asked more behavioural questions to understand the motivation behind joining/participation social media / communities of this nature.

I am conducting 4 in depth case studies of separate band websites and social media which will be supplemented with the information gleaned from these questionnaires. So i wanted them to be very separate entities and not to confuse the survey with any other artists.

I am also conducting some rigorous research of over 50 artists [best selling global artists according to IFPI] websites gauging quantitatively the level of 'customer engagement' based on other previous research. They are going to be used as a benchmark for placing the four chosen artists within the engagement profile.

Feel free to email me if you have any more questions or if I can clarify anything.

First, thank you lots for taking time to reply! :nice:

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you'll get bigger datasets!

Analysing the data (or rather type it into the program mask) is a pain, hope you won't encounter problems!

Oh, valid argument about choosing the same scale previous studies have used.

I found so many errors and contradictions in literature about sth I was doing... if those previous studies were using good methods I'm happy for you!

You should maybe keep in mind that some forums (coldplaying for example) are not official forums who belong to the band / where band members post as well.

That's different on the Muse or Snow Patrol site for example. Might be good for argumentation if you encounter some difficulties.

The official Coldplay website gives other (awesome) possibilities to engage for fans but there's a difference between having an official forum attached to a site or not I'd say.

Don't know how much you looked into the CP site for example but the band have made many efforts to keep their fans coming to the site and check news. Are you analysing these things as well?

Many bands have "boring" websites whereas others make lots of efforts.

That sounds great!

Are they chosen randomly?

You can still add more questions in the in-depth studies...

Your dissertation will be a lot of work anyways!

I think you'll find in many cases that people come to a site to gather information only and maybe sharing experiences on concerts that their environment isn't as interested in etc but stay because of the people they get to know there.

Oh ok, that's what I meant above. Sorry.

Cool that you're doing that as well, like I said some websites are awesome, some boring.

It's an interesting topic you have chosen!

Fingers crossed you can get satisfying results.

I suppose it'll take a longer time until you can tell results but I'll write an email later because I'm really interested in what you're doing there. :)

No worries, I won't ask more questions  it would just be great to have a contact with you to write in like half a year or something. :nice:

:) The study is of great interest to me because I am setting up my own company consulting for bands / brands and companies about social media and website function they could employ.

I realise in hindsight that the questionnaire could have been heaps better and bigger (but then again didn't want to scare people off too much).

Yeah I have separated in my research between communities set up by fan and set up by bands/artists themselves.

Quite surprising the amount of artists i am looking at that don't own or control their youtube channel. (though waiting to see if this correlates and is just warners/universal)

To be honest I picked the artists myself because of elements of their portfolio of social media that I liked (for example the exhibition room on cp mainsite is a fantastic way of getting return hits daily)

Well you compare them to the top 50 global best selling artists so picking them yourself is ok and maybe the only way to start *somewhere*...

Aaaand I think it's good that you considered people's disinclination to fill out long questionnaires but yours is nothing compared to a NEO PI-R  some more questions wouldn't have put off more people, they either click the link or they won't IMO :P

Good luck with your company plans!

you are right of course. its not 240 elements long. i was also looking at my plans to analyse them and the multistep analysis might cause trouble with too much data and my timescale.

hehe.

and thanks, the company is already going well, and going full time as soon as I finish uni.

- I wanted to study re: companys rather than music but turned out lots of previous study in companies (although focussed on e-commerce) and very little on music artists. None of its kind in social media yet either.

So quite exciting. :D fun to discuss it actually.
