May 16, 201016 yr What does this phrase mean to you, I hear it used a lot to mean "Thanks, I really appreciate it man!" but not in the UK. Here, it means something like, "Thanks, but thanks for nothing!" What does it mean to you? Thanks, I really really appreciate it! A bunch!
May 16, 201016 yr Over here we have similiar phrases and they mean thanks for nothing. I suppose it also tends on the tone that is used.
May 16, 201016 yr I think it's used to mean "I appreciate it," but I guess it really depends on the tone.
May 16, 201016 yr Oh my, this sounds like a trap for non-native speakers! I would have never thought that it could mean "thanks for nothing"!! :stunned: So first option for me.
May 16, 201016 yr In written form with an exclamation mark I'd take it as sarcastic. When I saw the thread title before I opened it I expected it to be a negative thread.
May 16, 201016 yr Well seeing as I read the title of the thread as the "thanks for nothing " way before I even went in to it, I guess I'm the 2nd choice. I rarely thrust "thanks a lot" when it's typed here, I can only read it as sarcastic. :laugh3:
May 16, 201016 yr 2nd one. But that may just be because I'm a very sarcastic person, so I use it sarcastically :P
May 16, 201016 yr Oh my, this sounds like a trap for non-native speakers! I would have never thought that it could mean "thanks for nothing"!! :stunned: So first option for me. this.
May 16, 201016 yr Well, every language has its traps such as idioms and slang to confuse learners. Anywho, I think if it was in written form, I would interpret it by the context of the text, because, obviously if you were a big help for whatever it is the other person needed, then I wouldn't really understand why someone would give a sarcastic thank-you.
May 16, 201016 yr I always assume it is appreciation when it is written/typed. The only time I would think otherwise is if someone says it in a sarcastic tone. Actually, I just say "thanks bunches".
May 16, 201016 yr It depends on the persons tone, but I feel it's overall the first choice in the poll
May 16, 201016 yr Instinctively, I was thinking of the first option as "Thanks a lot". Thinking over it again, I realize that it can also be sarcastic. It really depends on the context whether it is "Thanks a lot" (for your help / advice) = positive (happy smiley) or the sarcastic version with a "dozey" smiley. And if spoken, the tone will reveal the meaning.
May 17, 201016 yr It depends on the tone. If they say it nicely and seem happy, then it's "Thanks, I really appreciate it". But if it sounds sarcastic or angry it's the alternative.
May 17, 201016 yr Gee, I hope I haven't ever offended anyone by using 'thanks a bunch' / 'thanks bunches'. :embarrassed:
