piano/synths/backing vocals. though i'm not particularly good at any of them. i prefer helping to write music with my friend. hopefully we will get chance to record together properly this summer. the album in my sig is more of a practice between the two of us.

what music do you like if not coldplay?

My main influences in my playing are Hendrix and John Frusciante, I have a very varied taste in music but favourite bands would be: Joy Division, The Smashing Pumpkins,Led Zep,RHCP,Depeche Mode,The Black Keys, Blondie, obviously the Jimi Hendrix Experience and John Frusciantes solo work, also love alot of House music, how about you?.

i just write with my friend. he's really good at playing things i can't play. like i can play something basic and then he can take it to another level, and then i can guide him to other places. we work well off each other. we don't actually write anything down physically, but we play music together that we make up and riff off each other then learn it off by heart.

sorry it took so long to reply, i started writing this ages ago but me and my dad are watching old comedy clips on youtube and laughing our heads off. i'll be free in twenty to talk properly

Sorry I arrive a bit late but you're talking about music...

Radiohead, I looooove them ! I didn't know that MGMT suported them :surprised: I love MGMT too

I practiced piano during almost 10 years but I stoped when since my first year in university. To much work, not time enough unfortunately... My best friend and I talked about creating a band, he plays the guitar but, finally he did it without me.... :p

But I've never known create melodies or tunes, I just write lyrics

radiohead are my favourite band. they can create beautiful music, they can create sexy music, they can create angsty music. but it's all good. such a huge volume of work. everybody should be exposed to it, there is something for everyone and everything for someone.

ah lyric writing is fun. i still do it today. i write quite a lot but when i read it back i get quite embarrassed. i rely far to much on writing about love. i hope to develop this soon. to say i do a history and politics degree i should be writing about something with a little more depth but i only tend to write when i am sad, and the only thing that makes me sad is love and isolation. but er yeah, writing lyris is good, nothing to be ashamed of.

well my music taste has changed recently. i've mellowed out a lot. i used to be into a lot of guitar music like early kings of leon, white stripes, the strokes, the stooges, the smashing pumpkins but recently i've chilled out and gone for things like antony and the johnsons, department of eagles (bad name but good band) and nick drake. then i've always been into things like beck, radiohead, bjork, portishead and massive attack. a bit of leonard cohen doesn't go amiss either.

i've not heard too much of the black keys, though what i have listened to has been pretty decent. where would you recommend i start? and i know little about house music. i imagine the closet i get is aphex twin and the drum and bass he does. any recommendations with that genre?

Well most of the house I like is just n Electro House compilations I've downloaded, in regards to the Black Keys Magic Potion is a great album and a good place to start.

Here's a link of my favourite live guitar player doing an Aphex Twin cover they did a good job in my opinion:

About Radiohead... just :awesome:. According me they're one of the best bands ever... I'm a coldplay fan so they're my favorite band but Radiohead are the biggest ever :P

About writing lyrics... Well I wrote few songs... Sad, fun (or trying to be ) love, or not... It depends of my state of mind or my mood... That's strange because I write in english even I'm french.... Maybe it's because of I choose writing in english that I don't write as many songs I would like to write

I don't know a lot of bands or artists you talk about.... :shame:

well if you would like i will make you a playlist of music i like and bands you may not have heard of. listen to it in your own time there is no rush, and you don't need to reply to it, just listen to it at some point that is all i ask. and hopefully you will be turned o to some music that you enjoy.

for some reason i only get inspiration from when i'm down. there always seems to be a bit of a dark side to the things i create though i wish that wasn't the case. i really like the flaming lips who are a really positive and fun band.

you should download my album from my sig (you don't have to obviously but you might like it, you never know)/

this thread could be of help to me actually. not yet but in the future. i have always wanted to write a song in french but can't speak the language. one day if someone could do a translation for me i would be massively in their debt!

Good evening, everybody!

I read the last posts where you write about music taste and writing music.

Lily - you consider Radiohead to be "one of the best bands ever" or "the biggest ever". What about the BEATLES? The BEATLES had such a great impact on music then (i.e. in the 60'es) and in years to come up to today.

I played piano for many years, but always by reading notes and not by ear. I would have loved to be able to play by ear, but unfortunately I cannot do that.

the beatles are amazing and i love them but they are limited to an extent (simply by the lack of technology that was available when they were around). with regards to songwriting it's hard to argue against their amazingness but in my opinion radiohead are the better band. that's not based on anything concrete though just the overwhelming emotions i get from listening to so many of their songs. the bealtes are the biggest band of all time, and will be forever given the way that nostalgia further enhances their impact and memories make them bigger. if radiohead had been around in those days (whilst impossible to properly gauge hypothetically) it would have been interesting to see what they would have created.

Try to elaborate!

from a different time with different influences before them and different resources available to them. a totally different world to fit in with too, the beatles wouldn't be as big if they were released now, they were of a time. they'd be huge, but they wouldn't be world beaters. the fact they influenced most that followed aside from that statement.

Good evening Nancy, how are you ? :)

I totally agree with you about the Beatles. They're legendary and they had a big impact on the music. I really like their songs. There are so many big bands like that... We talked about Radiohead (my number 2 :)) but I think Queen is also a great band... Freddy Mercury had an amazing voice and the band have a lot of great songs.... I want to break free, Who wants to live forever.... I could quote more songs, I know that :)

About piano, I read notes to when I was playing the piano. Now, I can't read notes anymore so I play by hear. It's more difficult in my opinion but I manage to find few songs by this way.

Hello Lily,

I am fine, thank you.

I also like Queen very much - Bohemian Rhapsody and We are the Champions!

Freddie Mercury's voice was very unique.

I admire you for being able to do all the things you do: Studying and playing the piano by ear.

Yeah, that's it ! Freddy Mercury's voice is unic :D

I agree when I read it's difficult to compare Beatles with Radiohead, that's not the same time, the same music, the same ways to compose or write music. :)

Nancy ! I'm blushing :embarrassed::blush:

What are you doing apart from being posting in this thread? Reading or writing?

Yesterday evening / last night I was not in this thread because I was reading in a thread about Coldplay family members. I knew most of the things stated there, but was curious.

The bad weather in France with floods in the department of Var etc. was mentioned in news articles in both Denmark, Sweden, Germany and England. Around 20 died. I posted something about it on the humanitarian thread.

What I noticed was the sentence: Radiohead is the biggest group EVER (indicating that you are comparing all groups ever existing incl. the Beatles). And then I pointed out that the Beatles had such a great impact.

You're right, when I said Radiohead is the biggest band ever, I introduced all the bands :) That's the magic of the linguistic

About my night, I'm writing... I've got few problems with my story, dunno exactly how I'm gonna organize the story with all the characters  I've already writen a first version of the first chatper but I'm not satisfied so I'm trying to write it better.

Oh, bad weather was in news in foreign countries ? That's right that it was a disaster

Here we have a strong and cold wind but it was a sunny day. I saw my doctor... the eye specialist (don't know the english world :embarrassed:) so I didn't take off the sun... Maybe tomorrow but I think I'll stay at home to stay with my mother :)

What about your day ? Did you watch some football games?

**

Greg : good night to you

I did not watch the football games intensively - I was mainly interested in the result of the games.

I must say that I was shocked when I heard that Switzerland was leading in the match against Spain. From that moment I watched the rest of that match. When studying the games in beforehand, I found it difficult to say which side in most games would win. But I was never in doubt that Spain would beat Switzerland clearly. And then Switzerland won !!!! And I watched the second half of the match between Uruguay and South Africa.

Did you "watch" / listen to any football game?
