anyone else watching this closely??? I survived Hurricane Andrew in Miami back in '92, and ever since, whenever a storm approaches the States, I am obsessed! Its now been upgraded now to a Category 4 storm... :uhoh:

LOL I agree...

but the names are rotated every 5 years... unless the storm was of catastrophic proportions, then the name is retired...

who gets to name these hurricanes?

they SUCK!

Katrina sounds like a ballerina

and Earl sounds like some hick

They Should let me name them

..... because EVERYONE will get up and run when Hurricane Optimus Prime and Hurricane Jesus are heading your way!

according to NOAA:

Experience shows that the use of short, distinctive given names in written as well as spoken communications is quicker and less subject to error than the older more cumbersome latitude-longitude identification methods. These advantages are especially important in exchanging detailed storm information between hundreds of widely scattered stations, coastal bases, and ships at sea

:surprised: :P

 I like that!

I don't remember the last time the Northeast got a hurricane. . .

Just wait for Hurricane GASTON.

What a lame name for a hurricane.

I was just saying this yesterday.

Floyd was the absolute king of hurricanes. At one point he was projected directly at my house, if that thing would have come straight toward Florida like it was projected at one point it would have killed far more people then any other Hurricane. Just look at these pictures.

Don't they start naming them with letters or numbers if there are too many storms in a season? I think it's cool they alternate between boys and girls names. How cute.

Hurricane Jesus, that would be cool. I remember one time when I worked in retail and we called customers for a sale and I didn't bother to look at the name before I dialed the number and it was Jesus Gonzales and I said, "Hi, is Jesus there?" And of course I pronounced it Gee-zus instead of Hay-Zeus. I knew I messed up the second it came out of my mouth.

Those are pretty pics Jason. :awesome: So colorful.

Unfortunately I think a lot of people on the (northern half of the) east coast underestimate these things because they don't get hurricanes as often. Plus with it being a holiday weekend, some people won't want to leave.

They resort to using the Greek alphabet. However, they've only had to do that once (2005, year of Katrina and other beasts).

And of course, the names of the really destructive ones get "retired" and replaced with newer names.

I've always been fascinated by the weather, even though the weather here in California is bland and predictable. I heard a report that it's been a good two decades since New England got a big hurricane, and regardless of whether this thing's eye actually makes landfall, there's gonna be some pretty big effects. Play it smart, folks. Don't hesitate to evacuate if this thing heads your way.

I wanted to be a storm chaser even before it became popular/cool. :|

Took this picture of a huge storm system grazing us in the evening a few weeks ago

What an evil thing to say, I love it :laugh3: We have hurricane parties in Florida, so we underestimate them as well.

I've always hoped there was a hurricane named Jason that just destroyed everything in it's path, that would be so cool.

Oh yeah...

I almost just drowned out in the ocean. It's insane out right now because of the hurricane offshore.

Its supposed to hit us pretty hard here.
