Veronica Guerin

I really love the movie Elizabeth. I thought it was really underappreciated and still kind of wonder how Cate Blachett lost out to Gwyneth Paltrow for that year's Academy Award. Even so, I've been drawn to Blanchett ever since which is probably the only reason I went to see Veronica Guerin (VG).

This movie is about an Irish journalist who puts her own life in dangerous while reporting on the immerging drug underworld of Dublin. Reporting on the problem starts modestly, but as the movie continues the scope of the problem compounds and leads her into deeper levels of the city's crime network and, consequently, more danger.

This is a true story and really would have been more interesting as a documentary rather than as a dramatic adaptation. I felt like there were a lot of intricacies to the story that the movie couldn't go justice. The evidence behind the conclusions she comes to re: the crime network could not be dealt with approrpiately while trying to make a mainstream movie, and as a result the overall product suffered. As a mainstrea movie it is only average and as a documentary of Guerin's life it seems to fail.

I'm really not sure how Joel Schumacher ended up with the job of directing this movie. He did an adequate job but it was also a little insufficient. I didn't really feel the dangers builting. I didn't feel any tensions building. The increasing anxiety of Guerin's family is dealt with in a cursory manner. I'm assuming these are all decisions make by the director, choosing to focus more on the criminal elements int he movie. The problem is that that main criminal characters aren't really developed that well. "Why am I supposed to think these people are dangerous?" You see why they are, but you really don't feel it constantly (as you should).

Blanchett was decent. No, she was good. But it wasn't enough.

I left the theatre thinking that is movie was about middle of the road, but afte thinking about this a little more, I think this movie was slightly below average. The only reason I could see going to see it is if you really like the event of the movie (which I do) or you really like Cate Blanchett (*cough*). I thought this was about as good as My Life Withou Me, but while I would recommend people see MLWM</>, I cna't recommend everybody go see this.

That's it for my pretention ... for now.

I'm planning on see TCM and Wonderland this week.

That was my impression when I saw the trailer... not a really good movie.

Well, we won't spend our money, then... :smug:

I actually think the preview looked good...I also think she is a good actress

*shrug* I still want to see the movie and see what I think.

i thought the film was good but it didn't cover the story from all the different aspects of the media and the public while it was going on!!! i can remember it all and at the start of the film i thought they rushed into it all too quickly. most of the contraversy surrounding the drug problem was lightly brushed off in the film i think they should have focused a little more on that. I know the film was about her but i think they should have started the film with her starting journalism!!

I felt that some of the characters such as 'the monk' and especially 'John Trainer' were seen as good criminals!!! I knew John to see because he lived in my area and his family still does but i think they got him wrong!! :/

the film was average!

at the end though when they have the little boy singing 'the fields of Athenry' was good, even though the singing didn't sound good! I always see him busking in town :) bless him!

Yeah, I guess that' why I would have rather seen a documentary on the story so that the presentation wasn't so limited by the concept of a "Hollywood dramatic film."
