what current bands will reach 10+ albums, 30+ years?

I hate to think of the album being dead. Personally I enjoy songs on their own but I'd prefer a set of songs that work together rather than individual songs.

The album is practically dead in mainstream pop music, I'd say.

In New Zealand at the moment, the number one album is Kings Of Leon. Not Katy Perry, Justin Bieber or whatever.

It's hard to say with the Killers. If Brandon Flowers drops out, there will be no more Killers. If someone else drops out (which I think is likely), then I think the Killers could make it. I feel one thing is certain: Brandon Flowers will be making music 30 years from now. He is just too ambitious. The only question is whether or not he is doing it with the Killers.

By the way, my guess is that Mark is the first to drop out of the Killers. He always strikes me as a big baby.

I completely agree with you. As much as I enjoy The Killers as a group, I get the sense that Brandon is really the driving force behind the band.

But I really hope he stays with The Killers; as much as I loved Flamingo is was nowhere near as good as Hot Fuss or Day and Age. :bomb:

Mark doesn't really talk much.

I agree. Look at the iTunes top sales. The singles always belong to pop artist while the albums tend to be more rock oriented.

I don't think the album will die out. Not in all genres at least. Too many artists still are making albums and I don't see it being possible to make all of them shift away from making full albums. A few decades ago singles were the major way of releasing music, nothing new there.

That being said, if bands decide to release mostly singles and EPs I would be okay with that, especially if it increases the quality of tracks. Full albums get too long and have filler on them.

I think it also depends on the artist. Some bands over the years are better to be releasing full albums (Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Arcade Fire) rather than singles or EP's.

I completely agree. For most artists, I don't need to hear more than 8-10 songs. I would prefer they make those songs count instead of adding filler. More times than not, any CD over 10 songs is just too long for me.

No, I've always had a short attention span :)

:P

I find it hard to sit all the way through an album to be honest. Just so much of the same.

Depends on the artist.

Much of Radiohead's In Rainbows, for example, all sounds the same to me, while Muse's Absolution has lots of different "types" of songs that I like (slow songs with piano, loud and violent songs, heavy guitar songs, etc.). That may just because I give more of my attention to Absolution than In Rainbows though of course.

I totally agree about an album not being over 10 tracks long!

I don't want to be sitting down for ages listening to an album. I would prefer an album with 10 really good tracks rather than an album with 10 really good tracks and 3 or 4 fillers.

Haven't Coldplay said that no album should exceed 42 minutes? Or something like that...that sounds quite reasonable.

^I feel the perfect range for an album is anywhere from like 35-45 mins or so. Less than 35 is too short, and 45+ tends to be too long.

wow im really surprised at some of these responses. i almost always listen to an album all the way through. even if there is the odd weak track or filler i deal with it cos thats part of the experience of listening to an album. i dont find it all that arduous to listen to an album from start to end because i usually have it on in the background while im doing something else. if i ever do give an album my undivided attention (a rarity) a great album is easy to listen to all the way through but i guess a longer below par album is difficult after 10 or 11 tracks.
