oldmuckers
So next year we have REM releasing their 15th album and U2 giving us their 13th offering. Both of these bands rose to prominence in the 1980s and have continued remain active 30 years later. My question is what currently popular bands do you think have the potential to have that kind of longevity? Some are well on their way (Radiohead, Pearl Jam) and some have the desire (Coldplay, The Killers) but who do you think will actually do it? Megalomania
Muse. They already have five albums in ten years, so one can estimate that they'll have another 5 in another ten. :awesome: I think The Killers have the potential, but I don't know if they will. Coldplay will, but I don't think they'll be nearly as popular by the time they reach album 10. Radiohead definitely will.
hotdensestate
I have no idea who's a safe bet for this besides Radiohead. Interesting question...
bjaiken
It's good question. I would say you have to add Green Day to the list. They are almost there already. Pearl Jam, Radiohead, and Red Hot Chili Peppers will probably make it, too. I think it also matters how you get there. If you get to 30 years with almost all the original members intact, I would say that's a pretty strong achievement. But bands that have these indefinite hiatus all the time, or they'll still tour behind the band name but there will only be an original member or two still around - not that impressive. Guest howyousawtheworld
I think Coldplay would be a fair shout.
Arwen Evenstar
I hope both Coldplay and Radiohead are still just as relevant and famous 10 years from now.
bjaiken
I hope both Coldplay and Radiohead are still just as relevant and famous 10 years from now. Coldplay and Radiohead will always be fine. They have each established a huge fan base.
Cobalt
I am probably going to get my head beaten in if I say Coldplay will make it but they probably won't be as popular or relevant, amirite?

Cobalt
Well they won't be like forgotten, dur... but it'll be hard for them to keep having a "totes radical" effect like some people think they will.
deaths_friend
dont see much stopping coldplay and muse from getting to 10 albums. the killers prospects seem questionable especially with the solo ambitions of brandon flowers. RHCP has no.10 coming out early next year so thats all but done and will be marking 30yrs in 2014 but with john leaving im not sure if they've truly "stuck together". radiohead have a bit of work to do before they get to no.10, PJ have one more left but theyre on hiatus now, i really hope arctic monkeys stick around for a while imo theyre a band who have a lot to give. death cab for cutie are up to 6 so i would rate their chances of hitting 10. kings of leon should get there too. The Final Track
Built To Spill have 7 albums in 18 years, but they went on a short hiatus and have a lot of side projects (like solo albums). Elbow are the same bunch they started out as, have 4 albums (5 next year) in 20 years, I really hope they make it. Among solo artists, Regina Spektor has 5 albums in 11 years, Joanna Newsom has 3 in less than 10, but she's nowhere near finished. And no, I do not think The Killers will go the full distance. Prodigy anyone?
MrMagpie
I definitely don't see the Killers making 10+ album and being relevant for 30+ years. I could see both Coldplay and Radiohead making 10+ albums but not performing for 30+ years.
the_gloaming09
I could see bands like Radiohead, Beck, Pearl Jam, Green Day and also Muse releasing 10+ albums in 30 years. For some reason I sort of don't see Coldplay making it. I dunno why. I feel they still will make music for a few more albums, but I almost feel that they won't last... just a gut feeling. Cyan Kat
I Think Coldplay and Radiohead will surely make 10 albums not sure about 30 years because 30 years is a long time but I don't know maybe they'll surprise me. The killers on the other hand no, there's no saying yet if the band is going to get back together after Brandon flowers' solo work so I very much doubt they will last fr 10 albums. I wonder if Kasabian would make it they're currently working on their 4th album  as long as they don't split like Oasis did.
bjaiken
It's hard to say with the Killers. If Brandon Flowers drops out, there will be no more Killers. If someone else drops out (which I think is likely), then I think the Killers could make it. I feel one thing is certain: Brandon Flowers will be making music 30 years from now. He is just too ambitious. The only question is whether or not he is doing it with the Killers. By the way, my guess is that Mark is the first to drop out of the Killers. He always strikes me as a big baby.
Lore
I don't see coldplay making it, but maybe Muse and Radiohead will. I'd love to see Arcade Fire releasing a 10th album but I don't think they will
Black Rose
I think in 30 years time bands would have moved away from the album format and release standalone singles/EPs
bjaiken
I think in 30 years time bands would have moved away from the album format and release standalone singles/EPs I hope not, but it is entirely possible. I guess I could be happy if EPs were put out on a fairly regular basis. I'm usually not a fan of stand alone singles. I much prefer a collection of songs from a particular time. I agree, I much prefer the album format and find the standalone concept irritating, I'm a big Pumpkins fan and from memory I know you like them but I've not downloaded or heard any of Teargarden By Kaleidoscope yet because of the annoying way it's being put out there. You remember correctly. I am a big Smashing Pumpkins fan, and I won't download any of their singles. If they would put it on an album or EP, I would go and get it. Billy thinks the album is already dead, and it may very well be heading that way. But for now, I still want a complete collection of songs. Billy is acting all cynical (big surprise) and bucking the system (another big surprise) by refusing to put out albums any longer. He is crazy anyhow. That's the reason he is the only Pumpkin left.
