How do you find out if a fish is male or female :blank:

We had a fish called dearbhla ( pronounced dervla ) :|

My sister called it that for the laugh.

I was going to suggest Poseidon :awesome: It's the only one I could think of. I never liked Greek Mythology, I had to take it for two years and I thought it was boring :sad:

Generally the males have brighter colors and more vivid patterns. In the case of guppies, they males are smaller with larger fins and tails. If the female fish has been in contact with a male fish for even a few minutes, it's going to be pregnant, and you'll see the eyes of its babies through its skin.

If you only had 2 fish you should just call them 1 and 2. That way, if 1 dies, you'll still have 2. :)

I really don't want to have to deal with the fry, so I got all males instead.

They were all friendly with each other until this morning. I wake up, look at them, feed them, and notice that the big blue one (Poseidon) has a chunk missing from his tail. Not fin rot, just a bite. :|

You could use glass panes or perspex, and just slip it in between.

Yeah, they're probably just a bit stressed. It's a new tank as well, so I'm still trying to balance out the nitrates and whatnot.

You could ask at a pet store, I think they would sell some kind of divider. Or you could just find something like that around your house.

If you really can't, you could always separate them into another area, or use some kind of square net that can be fixed into the aquarium as another separate compartment. I would pity the fish though.

Yeah, I think I'll wait a few days and see if it continues before I do anything drastic.

Someone online suggested putting the bad fish in one of those square breeding nets, but only for a day or so, and then while they're in there change around the decorations so they don't feel so territorial. . . :shrug:

 

I think I'm going to pick up some Melafix and do a partial water change later to prevent fin rot and help heal the tail.
