What do you think of the British/Commonwealth monarchy?

Not that they are much more useful.

Basically. :dozey:

I don't have any interest in tradition etc in looking at the monarchy but politically I think the monarchy is just crucial for the UK. It acts as a vital barrier of protection from any potential collapse in democracy. The ultimate power still lies with the Queen on who can form a democracy and it is her duty to ensure that democracy remains in the UK. We saw a mild glimpse of the protection that the monarchy offers when for a few days in May this year.

We don't and never will live in the totalitarian regimes of the bygone ages so to think an abuse of power or a move towards depotism would be impossible. It's so easy to say 'what use do they serve' but just a bit of research into the politics of it all will make it clearer. In a potential crisis of democracy, only the King or Queen could prevent such undemocratic, threatening foces from ever holding power at Westminster. That is just vital.

Also it is a well known fact that the Monarchy brings in more money to the UK than us as taxpayers pay in to it. Plus the Royal Estates pays £150m a month into the Treasury here in the UK.

I guess the monarchy has more of a role in the UK, but in the Commonwealth countries it just costs us money!

I must admit I know nothing of the role the monarchy has on the Commonwealth countries but in my 1st year politics last year I was surprised at the potential role the monarchy in the UK has to play.

Where shall I send the 60p they cost you in 2009 to?

And can I have a refund of the £2 they bought in in extra tourism back?

Do you really feel the serve any purpose?, the Queen doesn't hold any power really their just an archaic pointless symbol of Britians former glory.

Do you accept Postal Orders, Cheque or paypal?:P

Yeah, indeed, but we could get rid of it in a heartbeat, which nobody will do until the monarchy tries to interfere in our political affairs.

As for the Royal Family personally? What a dysfunctional bunch they are!

But overall the monarchy for the UK at least is crucial.

edit: And yes - the Royal family does have German connections. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany was grandson of Queen Victoria.

But they could never reign for as THE thing governing the UK because they are out of the loop. All is based on parliament now, when during the time parliament was there, the King was the one to govern with the little help of the parliament. IF we go back to a system like that, then it's crisis in the UK.

They do bring in some money to the country, but they don't govern the UK which is the point of a king/queen in a country, no? Then why should they have all these prviledges in the commonwealth countries and in the UK.

As for the German connection, it also goes as far as Georges I and II who came from Germany, Georges III being the only king of the georgian era to be born in the UK.

The Queen isn't and never has been completely ignorant of what has been going on with what is HER government. She may not be present sitting alongside Cameron and co at Westiminster but she is informed daily of the going ons within government AND parliament. The monarchy is well and truly ingrained within the British Parliament and with Britain being the liberal free country it is (more so than most) I think it's doing a very good jon.

definitely NOT a waste of money. They bring in a lot of tourism and perform an important role as a figurehead. They are also head of the church (something I do not support but thats still important to many people).

As for the commonwealth, I think its brilliant, and its proven that most countries do better as a result of joining. Also who gives a damn where the Monarchy 's roots come from? Almost everyone in England has some hidden foreign descent, german, french, scandinavian etc..

she can be informed and stuff, but with her age and all the complicated stuff going on nowadays, I am not sure she'd be qualified to rule a whole country or even a whole empire.

That's just my opinion, I respect yours, I could be wrong.

I'm not an expert, but head of church... english people don't pray to the queen, do they? protestants in general rely a lot more on themselves than on religious instances. we're in constant evolution and I don't think that this comes that much as an argument to keep the queen there :/

yeah we are not saying that the special relationships between the countries of the commonwealth should disappear, I also think that this is nice. and as for the german roots, we were only mentionning it cause they were saying that the German tabloids talked more of the monarchy than the english ones

You can be certain that she does know what's going on perhaps mores than many members of the government. She is old nowadays but she is still very able. Personally I think she'll go on for at most 10 years before abdicating. I think there's a possibility and a probabiltiy that she will be the last of those grand monarchs. Perhaps if I was Canadian like yourself I'd support your views but being British I feel it has a vital role certainly within our country but maybe not yours.
