'Several killed' as Belfast plane crashes in Cork

A small plane travelling from Belfast has crashed in fog at Cork Airport.

It is understood at least five people have been killed, four are unaccounted for, several others injured and two are still trapped in the wreckage.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) said the Manx2 commuter flight crashed on the runway as it made a third attempt to land in low visibility shortly before 1000 GMT.

The IAA said there were 10 passengers and two crew onboard the plane.

The flight left George Best Belfast City Airport at 0812 GMT.

Rescue and Fire crews are at the scene of the crash.

Cork University Hospital has activated its major accident plan and an accident and emergency spokesman said they were awaiting casualties.

Manx Airlines has set up a special helpline on 028 90427004.

The IAA said the aircraft had caught fire and debris had been scattered over a wide area.

Tom O'Sullivan, from Cork Country Council, said: "The aircraft, was a light aircraft with 12 people on board.

"The current situation is that three fatalities have been removed. There were two seriously injured and one walking wounded. "

The accident will be investigated by the Air Accident Unit of the Department of Transport.

Very sad!

I have several friends who live in Belfast and I was happy to find they're all safe this morning.

RIP. What a tragedy.

It is understood at least five people have been killed, four are unaccounted for, several others injured and two are still trapped in the wreckage.

What kind of backwards mathematics and reporting is this? There were twelve on board. 5 dead, 4 missing, 2 trapped = 11. And yet several others injured? HUH?

3 fatalities and 3 injured sounds a bit more likely with the several missing thing to me. Silly article, screwing up tragedy reporting.
